Middle Unit

Years 1 and 2

Year 1s at Carlsruhe

This week has been a very exciting week for the Year 1s and 2s. As this article is being written, the Year 2s are on a big adventure at Lady Northcote camp! They left on Wednesday morning and return at the end of the day on Thursday (you will hear more about that adventure in next week’s newsletter!).

While the Year 2s are on camp, the Year 1s have been having some special experiences of their own. Yesterday the Year 1s went on an excursion to our Carlsruhe campus. The adventure began with a bus trip. The day consisted of 5 different activities, a BBQ and an icy-pole at the end. Students enjoyed paper aeroplane making, Lego challenges, old-fashioned outdoor games, an outdoor craft activity and maze making on the oval. The response from the students was extremely positive and we all went home feeling happy and exhausted. We were also very lucky to have wonderful parent and aide support while we were there. The Year 1 & 2 team are very grateful to all who helped.

Here are some recounts from some Year 1 students:

  • Audrey - My favourite part was seeing the guinea pigs. I was surprised that it was 150 years old. I spent time with Rachel.
  • Lacey - My favourite part was seeing all of the animals. I was surprised that it was over 150 year old. I spent time with Issy and it was really fun.
  • Hugo - My favourite part was spending time with the people I did it with. It’s over 150 years old. I spent time with Kiara.
  • Lachlan - My favourite part was playing hide and seek tiggy. I was surprised that Carlsruhe was over 150 years old.

Year 3

In Grade 3 we have started Term 4 with a 20 day Kindness Challenge. We read the book “Have you filled a bucket today?” then brainstormed what filling a bucket looks like, sounds like and feels like. This week we have talked about how we can fill a bucket. Ask your child to describe to you what filling a bucket means, it has been so rewarding!

How amazing are our elephants that we made in Art? It took a few weeks, but our hard work has paid off in the end. We are so proud they are on display in the Library. They will be coming home to show our families soon!

We started our Night and Day Science topic with asking questions. Here are some of the things we are hoping to learn about:

  • I wonder where the sun is when it is night time?
  • How far is the sun from the Earth?
  • What makes the sun so hot?
  • What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?
  • Why does the moon change shape?
  • Why can you sometimes see the moon during the daytime?
  • How do planets that are made of gas not fall apart?
