Year 3 Term 2 Newsletter

Dear Families,

Welcome back! We hope you had a restful Easter. Last term seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. We have enjoyed getting to know the children and implementing class routines and expectations of  Year Three. The children have settled incredibly well into their new classes and responsibilities.

YEAR THREE CAMP

One of the highlights of this term is Camp. In Week Seven, we will be attending Briars Camp in Mount Martha. This camp is a one night camp. We will be leaving school on Thursday 6th June and returning the next day,  Friday 7th June. The days will  jam packed with  engaging, creative, stimulating and interactive outdoor experiences such as low ropes, cooking, archery, push carts etc.  Camp experience fosters relationships and helps to build students' independence and resilience. It would be fantastic to see all students attending this wonderful program.

MATHEMATICS

During Mathematics this term, emphasis will be placed on developing strategies to solve word problems and consolidate number and place value. Students will also continue to build upon their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Telling the time, investigating angles, symmetry and location will also be explored in the classroom.

ENGLISH

This term we will be examining a variety of persuasive texts and  Australian poetry. Students will be provided with activities that aim at identifying the important features of these text types. Pupils will work towards incorporating the specific  language features into their own writing.  Throughout the term, students will also work on publishing their various writing  pieces.

News Reports will also continue. Please see the News Report timetable sent home for upcoming topics.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students build through the school curriculum. In the lead up to NAPLAN, teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program.

INQUIRY UNIT– Plants in Action

This term our Inquiry topic is ‘Plants in Action’. Students will be investigating life cycles of plants, the properties of seeds in different forms, flower and fruit development and plant growth. We will incorporate hands on experiments, theoretical tasks and group activities. To reinforce the unit of learning, students will be attending a Half Moon Bay Aboriginal Cultural Walk  which will focus on examining the flora and fauna of our local area. We will also be visiting ‘Edendale Farm’ to learn about local native plants and the importance of  revegetation in reserves and parklands.

We would appreciate some parent volunteers to assist us on the day - please let your classroom teacher know. Please also note that a current Working With Children Card is required for parents to come on the Excursion. This Working With Children Card is to be submitted to our Office on the day.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS

From Term Two onward, Year Three parents and guardians will receive notification via Compass informing them when their child is being awarded a  ‘Student of the Week’ certificate. Please do not inform your child, so there is an element of surprise  for our students.
