Conceptual PlayLab

Launch

Last night Paul and Cressida attended the launch of the Monash University Conceptual PlayLab.  The Conceptual PlayLab is an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded five-year research project investigating the best way to teach and support young children to form concepts in science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM).

The launch was also a celebration of the work of Laureate Professor Marilyn Fleer.  Marilyn’s Laureate Fellowship on the theme ‘Imagination in play and imagination in STEM’ investigates how families and teachers create conditions for children’s conceptual thinking in play-based settings. Preshil was honoured to be a part of this research in 2018 when the Lofties were a part of a playworld and undertook a dangerous rescue mission to the moon!  This work was guided by PhD student Rebecca Lewis, and it was an opportunity for our staff to learn how the partnering of imagination and conceptual learning aligns not only with the Preshil approach, but also within the framework of the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate.

This year Preshil will again be partnering with Rebecca Lewis who will be supporting the early years teams to undertake further STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) learning through the playworlds approach.
