VCE Update

Special Consideration Information Night:
Tuesday 16 May
This information night will be held in the Library from 7pm to 8pm. It is aimed at parents of current Year 11 students who are applying for the first time for the 2018 academic year. All aspects relating to special examination arrangements will be discussed so if you are considering applying for your child (eg rest breaks, extra writing time, scribe) we encourage you to attend.
General Achievement Test (GAT):
Wednesday 14 June
The GAT is relevant for any student studying a Unit 3/4 sequence. Students who have not sat the GAT before are encouraged to review the tests from previous years so as to familiarise themselves with the format. Previous GATs can be found at http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/gat/gat.aspx.
The tests are general in nature and there is no need to study for them. However, students should be reminded that the VCAA will use students’ GAT scores as a basis for:
- contributing to statistical moderation of school-based assessment results
- checking the accuracy of external assessment marking
- calculating the Derived Examination Scores
As such it is very important that students take the GAT seriously and give their best effort on the day.
For some students the GAT will be their first external exam. Victor and Kris will be discussing the process and expectations with all students at a Forum before the GAT takes place.
Required administration of SACs/Outcomes
Last Wednesday we spoke to VCE students to outline a clarification of the School's position regarding resitting SACs/Outcomes to redeem an ‘S’ which is as follows:
- A student who provides a medical certificate to confirm an absence will be afforded the opportunity to resit a SAC with no penalty.
- A student who misses a SAC without providing a medical certificate will sit the assessment at a time determined by the School. The student will receive a numerical score of zero, and may only redeem an ‘S’ for the sake of VCE unit completion. The student will be given one chance only to redeem an ‘S’. Failing to reach this standard will result in an ‘N’ being awarded.
These two points are consistent with the policy as outlined in the Preshil 2017 VCE Handbook as quoted below:
Failure to provide the correct documentation after missing an Outcome or SAC/SAT will result in a score of ‘0’ being applied and the result will be listed as an ‘N’, which in turn leaves a student with an ‘N’ for that Unit.
After an unapproved absence a student will be offered one chance to resit the assessment to redeem an ‘S’. The resit will be organised by the teacher and VCE Coordinators for a time that is suitable for the School. This is the only opportunity a student will get to redeem an ‘S’. Missing the resit or submitting work that does not satisfy the ‘S’ requirement will remain scored as an ‘N’. A student who resits an assessment will not receive any feedback for the assessment other than an ‘S/N’.
The clarification made further to this relates to students who attend a SAC with no realistic attempt to complete it. In this case, the situation will be treated in the same manner as a student who did not attend. As such, a student who doesn't make a realistic attempt to complete an assessment will only be given one chance to resit the assessment to redeem an "S".
School Formal 11 & 12:
Friday 23 June
Preparation for the 2017 Years 11 & 12 School Formal is in full swing. Victor and Kris would like to give a massive thank you to the committee who have done a great job organising how the night will unfold.
This event will take place on the last day of Term 2 and looks like being a spectacular affair. A letter will shortly be sent to parents from Marilyn with all details, and tickets will be available thereafter for purchase.
Kris and Victor
As always, please contact Kris or Victor if you have any concerns or require further clarification of the VCE process.
