Our new problem solvers!

We would like to welcome our newest problem solvers to Corpus Christi! But these are some faces you are already familiar with.

Our Year 5 students have been given a unique opportunity to take part in some educational settings at Science Works over the coming weeks. This will involve students designing Virtual and Augmented Realities, problem solving and listening to experts from around the world.

While this opportunity is still in its early stages, the Year Fives all seem very keen to rise to the challenge and bring a range of exciting new technologies into the school as we lead into 2020.

3 Key strategies

Your support and guidance can give your children the confidence to make sound decisions online — and ask for help when they need it.

1. Be engaged, open and supportive

  • Keep lines of communication open. Ask about their online experiences, who they are talking to and whether they are having any issues.
  • Reassure your child they can always come to you, no matter what. Let them know you will not cut off internet access if they report feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when online — this is a real concern that may stop your child from communicating with you openly.

2. Set some rules

  • Set age-appropriate rules for devices and online access with consequences for breaking them.
  • Discuss the type of websites that can be visited, time spent online and acceptable online behaviour. (The example from ThinkUKnow Australia can be a good starting point)

3. Use the available technology

  • Get to know the devices you and your children use and set them up for privacy and online safety.
  • Choose apps and games carefully, taking age ratings and consumer advice into account.
