Reading Detectives Program

"Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society"

(UNESCO, 2004; 2017)

In 2020 St. Peter's College is embarking on a structured literacy and reading program for years 7 & 8 at both Cranbourne West and Clyde North campuses as part of the English Program. Led by Teacher Librarians, the program will include reading for pleasure combined with Sustained Silent Reading and conferencing with all students to reinforce the basic skills required to gain meaning and understanding from their reading. The potential results will not only improve literacy (including comprehension and vocabulary) but also a love of reading and experimentation with new genres.

So to this end, and with great fanfare, we launched the inaugural Reading Detectives Program with Year 7’s this week.

Our Head of English at Cranbourne Campus, Mr. David Stretch, addressed the students at the launch;

“We believe passionately that reading is a life-long skill; an essential skill for success and confidence for you as students. There is also tremendous value in reading for your well-being; for fun, for relaxing and empowering you to new knowledge and information. Your teachers, parents and Mr. Black will be tracking your progress and growth and we look forward to 2020’s Year 7’s being the best students ever!”
