Clyde North Campus News

Welcome to first term 2020
The first day of the new school still remains one of my most favourite days because it reaffirms my belief in the vocation that is teaching. How can one not be inspired by the symmetry that this day brings? Nervous excitement felt by year 7 students and their parents balanced by the casual confidence of returning students especially the year 12s and the realisation that this is their final year. For all of us it is a day full of promise and new beginnings.
Year 7 students and many of their parents started the day attending a short assembly. Their energy and optimism was inspiring and infectious. Year 7 students enjoyed a number of activities organised by our Pastoral Care Leader, Mr Peter Brannan, and were well supported by their teachers. The highlights included an Amazing Race challenge, assisted by the year 12 students with configuring their laptops and of course the BBQ at lunchtime.
2020 Challenge: Action your way to success
All students spent considerable time last week developing their Semester One academic and personal goals with guidance from their Learning Advisor. It is easy to set goals, what is hard is doing what is needed to succeed. How we behave determines how successful we are in achieving goals. With this in mind I have challenged all students to take on the mantra; action your way to success. This means behaving in smart and deliberate ways to support the achievement of your goals.
Deng Makuei Year 12 Augustine House Captain is a great example of actioning your way to success. Deng knew that to be a successful House Captain he must lead by example and not ask anything of his peers that he was not prepared to do himself. With the swimming carnival the first major House Competition for the year, Deng set himself the goal of leading his House to success. However, Deng cannot swim so how could he participate? Deng could be a critical supporter by organising other students to sign up for events, or lead through cheering on his House, or he could learn to swim and sign up for events. And this is what Deng did. Over the holidays Deng learnt to swim, he actioned his way to success. Deng will proudly lead his House as a critical organiser, a cheerer and a swimming participant. For Deng it does not matter whether he wins his swimming events, what matters most is he successfully actioned his way to achieving an important personal goal, to become a successful leader.
Quite often students moving from primary school to secondary lose some of the good practice that they have developed with regard to being SunSmart. We are all reminded to be SunSmart at all times. January has seen some very hot temperatures and February and March may equally be as hot, therefore all students are to be SunSmart, hat, sunglasses, and of course sunscreen. We will continue to monitor weather conditions and in response to threats of extreme heat we will make the necessary adjustments to both inside and outside activities, and programs. As our campus continues to take form and grow it is especially important that all students become real SunSmart ambassdors.
