From our Principal

Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

The year is finally underway. Despite the heat on the first Friday, students and staff have come back re-invigorated and energised.

It would be remiss of me not to reflect, in this first edition, on the devastating fires which have impacted so significantly on our near neighbours in East Gippsland and Southern NSW. It never fails to surprise how communities bond together in a show of unity and support for those in need. The Christian message articulated clearly in Catholic Social Teaching calls on each of us to promote the life and dignity of the human person, hear the call to family, community, and participation, action the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable and promote the care for God's creation.

Awards Assembly

Our first assembly for the year was fittingly celebrating the high achievements of the class of 2019 and there was much to celebrate. In this forum I again congratulate our high achievers. Below is a summary of some of the results:

  • An increased percentage of students obtaining an ATAR in the 90s, 80s, 60s and 50s.
  • The same percentage of students obtained an ATAR in the 70s
  • 13% of students in the 80s
  • 89% of students applying for a Tertiary pathway were successful
  • Students placed in University courses such as: Architecture, Biomedical Science, Criminology, Commerce, Education, Nursing, Journalism, Animal and Veterinary Studies

Our Dux – Congratulations Sandeepa Andra Hennadige

ATAR 92.05

University Course: University of Melbourne – Science

Here was a couple of excerpts from his Dux Speech to the School community:

“ Throughout my two years of VCE I set myself goals, some that pushed my boundaries..” and

“…I do want to encourage all of you to have confidence in yourself. Don’t be afraid to try those challenging subjects….” and

“you are starting VCE and you want to make sure you get off to a good start….Try to do your best in your exams…manage your time and study effectively

Who’s Who

We value significantly the partnership between parents and the College. In a large organisation it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming as to who to make contact with. Attached to this newsletter is a list of our staff and their roles in 2020. Please ensure you retain a copy so that you can refer to it when the need to contact the school arises. In respect to pastoral or well-being issues, the first reference point must always be your child’s Learning Advisor. At the senior leadership level it is important to highlight two changes: Mr David Hansen has moved into the critical role of DP – Learning and Teaching. We also welcome Mr Jeremy Wright as the new DP – Head of Campus (Cranbourne). Mr Wright comes with a wealth of senior leadership experiences.

I’d like to also take this opportunity to welcome the staff new to our community this year. They include:

  • Clyde Nth Campus
    • Jeremiah Brown – Learning Support Officer
    • Lighia David – Mathematics and Robotics
    • Jacinta Formosa – Learning Support Officer
    • Matthew Hocking – RE and Humanities
    • Tishan Lokuge – Maths, Science, RE
    • Brooke Massee – Japanese
    • Anju Selex - Science
    • Jenna Stojan – Learning Support Officer
    • Jeannette Valencia – Hospitality and Food Technology
    • Mervin Wakefield – Product Design and Integrated Studies
  • Cranbourne Campus
    • Mark Barber – AFL Trainee (IT)
    • Claudia Busetta – Learning Support Officer
    • Andrew Crawford – Building and Construction and Product Design
    • Jodie Dean – Learning Support Officer
    • Kathleen Pope – Mathematics
    • Marissa Sarif – HHD, History, English, House Leader (MacKillop)

Policy Implementation

In the coming weeks, parents will receive information regarding a change in policy direction in a couple of key areas. One of which is our new mobile phone policy. In the interim, it has been made crystal clear to students that mobile phones can only be accessed before school, recess and lunch-time. In respect to Headphones and Ear Pods, they are not to be worn during school time other than in a specialist class such as music. The rationale is simple. Students must be working within the most conducive learning environment possible.

Keep this date free

The House welcome evenings are to be held in the coming weeks. It is critical that families make every attempt to attend as there is some  significant information that all parents need to be familiar with in respect to our new Learning Management System, SPACE, some new curriculum initiatives and the continued development of our Continuous On-line Reporting process. It cannot be emphasized enough that parents who are engaged actively with their school have more chance of producing engaged learners. Please ensure you make yourself available for the respective Parent evenings:

  • Cranbourne Campus:  18 February 2020
  •  Clyde North Campus:   20 February 2020

Changes to the Newsletter

For 2020 we will be trialling a fortnightly as opposed to a weekly Newsletter. This will be reviewed at the end of the year where feedback from you will be essential.

Enjoy the week ahead.
