2020 McCarthy Olympics

Wednesday 16 September was the inaugural MCC Olympic day held at the College. After COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the Walkathon and the Athletics Carnival it was great to have a whole College event. The day involved students participating in their year and house groups in a chosen sporting, recreational, cultural or gaming activity. The activities included Oztag, Basketball, Futsal, Handball, Ultimate Frisbee, cultural games, computer games chess, debating, theatre sports, and iSTEM.
The day ran really well thanks to wonderful efforts of the staff and student helpers on the day. Our groundsman Mick Herden and Brad Welsh worked really hard getting the fields in great shape and equipment set up for the day. Whilst Mrs Briony Martin worked hard to set up the selection process for the students.
The levels of participation, enthusiasm and cooperation amongst the students on the day was outstanding. The Year 12’s had the privilege of having a mufti day and had some great outfits supporting their house group and lots of fancy and creative dressers. The most popular activity of the day was the Oztag and with 3 fields running there was plenty of action. The standard of play was very high and there were plenty of close matches. The highlight of the day was the Year 12 Oztag grand final where the students formed a guard of honour for the players. In the Year 12 grand final Dominic defeated Chisholm by 5 tries to 2. The teams were very strong with Dominic including players like Liam Ball, Tom Croake, and Hamish Sparke. Whilst Chisholm had some strong players like Ethan Russell, Mitch Ebert and Cameron Lane. A big thank you to all the students who willingingly refereed the games especially Bailey Betts who refereed the year 12 grand final and did a great job.
Year 12 students enjoyed the photo booth experience and the BBQ was great serving up hamburgers as well as sausage sandwiches this year. A big thank you to the Vinnies team and Environmental Council for running the BBQ and to Mr Nichols for organising the food.
The futsal and basketball were also well contested with some highly skilled and competitive matches. The games were played with great sportsmanship and spirit and all participants should be proud of their efforts. A big thanks to Issie Dube, Jake Larkham, Jim Zell, Ethan Russell, Chris Pearson and Alex Groth for refereeing these games.
iSTEM participants had great fun making Roman Catapults and students shot out rubber golf balls into targets as well as Mighty Towers made out of minimal products withstanding the elements of the weather. In debating there was some great topic and robust arguments that were really well delivered by our keen students.
Students were also able to build their skills in theatre sports and the teamwork displayed was excellent. The Collegespirit and conduct of the students on the day was fantastic.
