LRC News

The Learning Resource Centre is the heart and soul of our extraordinary community. Even in this unprecedented year, we have all enjoyed library services which have been uninterrupted and available to us beyond the walls of its building.

A major highlight this term has been seeing everyone’s excitement at actually being able to come into the library together. During Book Week, staff and students celebrated with a frenzy of borrowing from the flood of new books that hit our shelves.

We are wild about our new books. So if you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet please come in or check them out online. We’d love to see you.

Teen Library Advisors

With all of our students back on-site, we were finally able to congratulate our Teen Library Advisors (TLAs) and to give them their badges. A full list of our TLAs will be available on Compass.

We are delighted to have our fabulous TLAs back amongst the shelves, returning books to their proper places, helping staff and students to locate resources, assisting the library staff and much, much more!

From our TLAs

We always encourage our TLAs to develop their leadership skills and to promote the library to their peers and the Dandenong High School community. In this edition the newsletter, they are sharing their thoughts on returning to the library, the benefits of ebooks, and the experience of writing a novel in a month.

Returning to the Library - Jasmine (B8)

The library is an amazing place in the school and it is so good to be back there again. While we were at home we had the choice to read an ebook or a book you had at home, which probably became boring but having the library back open again means you are able to get any book you would like to read.

The Benefits of eBooks - Victoria (E8)

While ebooks are never as good as a real physical book, when you can’t get your hands on that book you want to read they’re a great substitute. Having hundreds of books at your fingertips at all times allows you to have the magic of reading at the touch of a button, even when you can’t get a physical book. The LRC’s ebook system is easy to navigate and has many amazing books for you to read.

Writing a Novel in a Month - Heather (H8)

Camp NaNoWriMo in July was one of the best things that I had done because I got to write a story about my life. It was the best time ever even though I was the only one from Dandenong High School to do Camp NaNoWriMo in July. I guess it was very sad because I was very lonely when I was writing my story, but I hope that I can continue with my story in NaNoWriMo this month. I had one of the best teachers to help me get through Camp NaNoWriMo. Miss Gatward is great support she helped me when I was stuck with my story and she gave me challenges through July.

NaNoWriMo YWP 2020

NaNoWriMo stands for 'National Novel Writing Month'. It is a world-wide writing challenge that runs every November. Writers from every country challenge themselves to write a whole novel in a month... and many of them do it!

We run the Young Writers Program at Dandenong High School for students in all year levels with all writing abilities. Some of them have never written a story before! Our students are writing everything from their life stories (with people's names changed), exciting science fiction, heart-warming romance, fan fiction, adventure, fantasy and more!

Dandenong High School's NaNoWriMo Stats
