Kooyong student prize - congratulations to Thomas Shelley and Hannah Treisman

The Kooyong Student Prize recognises students in schools in the Federal seat of Kooyong for excellence in academic and extra-curricular pursuits, leadership amongst their peers, upholding school values and strengthening the community.

Tom Shelley and Hannah Treisman were each awarded the Kooyong Student Prize by MP Josh Frydenberg last month, and are pictured with Koonung teacher Marilyn Faithfull.

Tom has been acknowledged for outstanding leadership.  In his role as School Captain he modelled the College values, acted with integrity and supported others.  He has been integral in building awareness for Indigenous Reconciliation within the College, attending meetings and contributing to discussion including an acknowledgement plaque and sport uniforms that feature Indigenous design – this became the Great Victorian Bike Ride jerseys.  Tom facilitated a meeting involving Yorta Yorta man Corey Atkinson and College leaders, organised a consultation with Wurundjeri Elders, Aunty Gail and Aunty Julieanne, ran a half-marathon in the Run Melbourne Event raising funds for the Cathy Freeman Foundation and was part of a group of students who visited the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School.

Hannah’s award recognises her as an emerging leader in the College.  She is highly articulate and well-respected by both her peers and staff.  While maintaining strong academic results across her subjects, Hannah has actively involved herself in the College community, serving on the Year 11-12 Formal Committee and giving backstage support in the College play.  She has been elected Student Representative Council President in 2019.

Koonung is a stronger community because of the involvement and leadership of students like Hannah and Tom.

Koonung students attend Interact District Assembly Day

On Monday 3 December a number of students  attended the Interact District Assembly Day (IDAD). The day consisted of several workshops, all of which focused on developing skills linked to leadership, planning and organisation. It began with a seminar on public speaking, with techniques and tips being shared amongst the group. It really focused on effective public speaking and how to achieve this. This linked directly into the next learning point of the day – leadership. We discussed and learnt about what a good leader does, and how to be a good leader. This is especially beneficial to the students that were at IDAD, most were representatives of respective Interact Clubs – with roughly 10 schools in attendance. Leadership was emphasised at the event, due to its direct correlation to Interact. Its link related to the role of Interact and what it’s about – trying to drive change through projects and volunteering. Both of which require group work and leading a team. This is why the day was then continued with workshops solely around respective club planning. We all learnt about the roles of each type of representative in the club as well as what events and other actions can be taken by an Interact Club to ensure its success. Overall, the day was a chance to learn more about what is needed for the success of an Interact Club, whilst meeting new people and gaining new skills.
