Premiers’ Reading Challenge Competition for all secondary students

The annual Australia-wide Premiers’ Reading Challenge (PRC) has announced the Reader’s Review Competition for Secondary School students. Here’s how to enter in three easy steps:

1.Students write a review of one book they’ve read from the lists          below. All the books on these lists are on display in, and available for loan from, the College Library:

Years 7 and 8

  • The Fall by Tristan Bancks
  • Thai-Riffic by Oliver Phommavanh
  • Lion: A Long Way Home (Young Readers edition) by Saroo Brierly
  • The Other Side of Summer by Emily Gale
  • Ting Ting the Ghosthunter by Gabrielle Wang.

Years 9 and 10

  • The Sidekicks by Will Kostakis
  • You Must be Layla by Yassmin Abdel-Magied (out this month)
  • I Am Sasha by Anita Selzer
  • Intruder by Christine Bongers
  • Found by Fleur Ferris.                                                                                                                                                                                                           2.Complete an entry form: Available from the College Library or print from https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/about/events/prc/PRCreadersreviewentryform.pdf

          3.Send completed entries to: readingchallenge@edumail.vic.gov.au

All entries must be received by 5pm on Saturday, 6th July 2019.

Winner’s prize: a pack of sensational books; publication of their review on the Premiers’ Reading Challenge website; a tour of Penguin Random House, Melbourne, with four friends and two teachers or parent/guardians of their choice.

Students in Yrs 7 - 10 have already been registered to participate in the Challenge, thanks to our PRC Coordinator, Mrs Celine Bush, from the College Learning Enhancement Team, and can request their individual username and password from their Reading Room teacher. Year 10 students can request their login details from their Learning Mentor.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge Uptake

Part of the fun is seeing how many of our students take up the challenge and be a part of the 2019 Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Our PRC Coordinator Mrs Bush, reports that to date:

  • 642 students have been registered for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge and one has completed the Challenge already.
  • 35 students have logged on and begun recording.
  • 75 books have been listed and 27 have been finished.

We see every student as a reader and their participation in the PRC - whether readers attempt one book or finish all - builds confidence, introduces readers to books they may like, encourages discovery of reading for enjoyment, provides motivation for reading for enjoyment, and challenges readers to see what they can achieve.

For details about participating in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge contact Mrs Bush cbush@sje.vic.edu.au or go to https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events/prc/Pages/default.aspx

The Premiers’ Reading Challenge closes Friday, 6th September 2019 so plenty of time to encourage your son or daughter to participate.

And Talking About Challenges…Here’s a Reading Challenge for Adults

Reading Hour is Thursday, 19th September 2019 and all Australians are encouraged to pick up a book and read for one hour on your own or with your children.  Save the date on your calendar!

“The Australian Reading Challenge is designed to increase the frequency and duration of reading, driven by the desire to create and sustain a less stressed, healthier, happier, more resilient and more intellectually and emotionally intelligent Australia.”

In coming newsletters we’ll have more about the Australian Reading Hour and the Australian Reading Challenge, where you can take your own reading challenge by registering and benchmarking your reading habits against the national average, making a reading pledge, setting up your personal challenge from pre-set lists, and receiving reminders, encouragement, recognition and rewards for attaining goals.

Did you know…

In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea.
