Justice Matters Camp
Year 9, 10 and 11 Social Justice students went to the Justice Matters Camp in Beechworth from the 6th - 8th of May. We were blessed to stay in the beautiful original Brigidine Convent. We had many guest speakers who inspired us to learn more about refugees and asylum seekers, social Catholic teaching, human trafficking, indigenous culture and sustainable food and water, just to list a few. We did so many fun activities such as exploring Beechworth township to find brands of Fair Trade and Ethical Shopping. We then had deeper conversations on the importance of shopping Fair Trade and ethically and how this affects many around the world. Because we were put into mixed groups with the other schools it allowed us to meet other students from around the Diocese and explore social justice issues together. Overall, it was a really good experience learning about raising awareness around social justice.
Careers Week 13th May – 17th May
It has been a big couple of weeks at St. Joseph’s College leading up to National Careers Week.
Last week the Year 10 students participated in the Annual Beacon Careers Expo. The event was once again very informative for students and enabled them to hear firsthand from presenters who worked in many and varied industries. Students attended Workshops in Police, Medicine, AFL, Electrical, Plumbing, Agriculture, Accounting, TAFE, Drama, Physiotherapy etc. The students would like to thank the presenters who gave up time from their very busy schedules to make this day so successful and one on the best career expo’s in country Victoria. Thanks must go to Cheryl Sweeney and the Beacon team for making this day possible.
During this week St. Joseph’s College students have been privileged to attend small lunchtime seminars on different careers and pathways. We were very fortunate to have speak to our Year 11 Chemistry students and also a group of students from Years 10 - 12 Mr Michael Angove Head of Biomedicine, Pharmacy and Science at LaTrobe University. His message to students was that it is not impossible to reach your ultimate goal, to enjoy what subjects you study and think about a career in Rural Medicine and Pharmacy, and to be aware of the many job opportunities that are available to them.
The Defence Forces visited our students on Wednesday and a small group had some very valuable one-on-one time with their recruitment team. Students learnt about the many opportunities available to them, the grades they need to be accepted, and the process of applying.
One of the University of Melbourne’s school of residencies, Newman College, met with Year 12 students who are hoping to attend Melbourne University and gave them very detailed information on the application process, timelines and life in a University residency.
Today the Ambulance and Police will be visiting at lunchtime to speak to any student across Years 7 – 12 who are interested in these pathways.
