Seeds of Hope

By Gerry Holmes ( Resident Musician )

When the world seems a little out of control, sometimes the best thing you can do is sing.

Singing lifts the spirits. Singing opens the lungs and increases oxygen to the brain. Singing takes that little seed of creativity in each of us and helps it grow.

Singing is contagious.

The Junior School has been nurturing a little secret that the rest of the BHCS community might not know. Each week they have been tending it, pruning it and watching it grow. Even in isolation, the Junior Choir has been meeting via Zoom to join voices and to sing.

Back when Stage 4 restrictions looked imminent, Mr Dickson and I came up with an idea to try and keep the Junior Choir actively contributing to our community. Co-opting the skills of Mr Thompson, Mrs Nicholas, Madame McGrath, Mrs McDowell and Jono Callow, the students have been busy rehearsing a BHCS original song called ‘Seeds of Hope’.

The song is about how sometimes life can be difficult; things can seem dark. But each of us has the opportunity to help one another push through and grow towards the light. What better example of our theme for this year – ‘the courage to grow’.

With rehearsals nearly finished and students filming their own contributions to the song, the next step is to sync it all together and create a video clip – our gift and encouragement to the school community in this time of perplexing and mixed blessings.

Members of the Junior Choir – if you haven’t yet filmed your part in the song, don’t leave it too late!

And for the rest of the school community – take a seed of hope from some of the lyrics:

One kind deed can fill the need

First one, then two, my gift to you

Three, then four, together; more

And digging deep, we find courage to grow
