Senior Report (5/6)

Wominjeka from the GUMNUT COMMUNITY - Tom, Tien & Emma

Our June Learning Story

The Senior Learning Community has continued their inquiry into developing healthy habits, focusing on ‘What is inside our body’. Students have been learning about organs, blood flow throughout the body and our skeletal system. Our students have shown our value of curiosity by using the 5/6 area’s question box! Students have had the opportunity to place questions and wonderings for Tom and Tien to investigate. Thanks to our shared curiosity we have all learnt so many amazing things about our bodies!

Students have investigated a range of healthy habits over the term. Students have planned, designed and demonstrated their ‘Healthy Habit Game’ during our Prep buddy sessions. The sessions were fantastic. Our students completed the planning and game design during our Positive Behaviour for Learning sessions. Students worked in small groups and made appropriate adjustments to their activities as the process continued. Our 5/6 students collected data, conducted trials and then refined their rules and instructions for their games.

During writing sessions, our students have shown brilliance and creativity. Using the hero’s journey story structure our students have planned, edited and produced fantastic published stories of their own. As a senior school we are so proud of the results of this unit of writing. Tien and Tom insist that you read your child's story! You will be amazed at what they have been able to produce.

In Mathematics, students have been focusing on reflecting on data they have collected and then making accurate bar graphs and pie charts. Students were able to use their prior knowledge of fractions and percentages to provide as much information as possible on their displays. Students have also been investigating different strategies for multiplication and division, finding what strategy suits them best, which has led to greater understanding and very pleasing results.

Active Friday

Active Friday continues to be a highlight for many students in the Senior Learning Community, with students participating in team-building activities. Our cohort has been focusing on improving communication skills during gameplay to achieve a shared goal. We have some fantastic athletes and sharp strategic minds working together, which makes for great Active Friday lessons.

Home reading continues in the Senior Learning Community, with students selecting texts from school or home to read and record on their reading log. Each log contains an individual reading goal that the student is working towards.
