Our June Learning Story

The Junior Learning Community have continued to investigate the human body, focusing on the digestive system and the importance of breakfast. We successfully held our very first Junior Breakfast in the Pod Building on Thursday 16th June 2022. The day before, students set up the tables with their cutlery, placemats and name tags, ready for the next morning. Students arrived at school the next day, bright and early, in their pyjamas and took their assigned seats. Our first dish of the day was cereal - yum! We had a choice between Wheet-Bix, Cornflakes, Rice Bubbles and Special K. Students demonstrated independence by adding their choice of cereal to their bowls. Our next course was delicious toast! Students had a choice between white and wholemeal bread, and a range of spreads including Vegemite, margarine and honey. They independently added their own spreads to their toast. Apple and orange juice were also served with this meal. Next, students finished off their morning meal with a banana. Once all students had finished their meal, it was time for everybody's favourite part - the pack-up and clean-up! Students showed fantastic collaboration through this whole event - from set-up to pack-up.

In Reading, students have continued to immerse themselves in Non-Fiction texts. They have learnt about key features of these texts such as labelled diagrams, contents pages and glossaries. They were given multiple opportunities to apply these new skills by exploring these texts independently, labelling diagrams and creating their own contents and glossary pages. Students were taught how to find the main idea and supporting details of non-fiction texts using this skill to begin investigating summaries. In preparation for our Junior Breakfast, students were exposed to multiple text types including menus, invitations and recipes, gaining the knowledge of their purposes and how to extract key information from them.

Writing this month focused on information texts. Students explored 'facts' and created their own information report on a part of the body. They used the knowledge and skills learnt in Reading and integrated it into their writing. Their information reports contained a contents page, headings, facts, pictures, and a glossary. Students also explored the features of menus and wrote their own menu for the Junior Breakfast. Another area of study was invitations, where students investigated the structure and language features of a range of invitations. Using this newly-acquired knowledge, students wrote their own invitation to the Junior Breakfast.

In Mathematics, students investigated topics such as capacity, time, fractions, money and comparing numbers. Students used their problem-solving skills to calculate how many litres of milk and juice were needed for the Junior Breakfast by using measuring cups, bowls and water-filled milk bottles. By doing this, they discovered that approximately 4 cups fit into 1 litre, 8 cups into 2 litres and 12 cups into 3 litres! Students also explored supermarket catalogues where they found, calculated and compared prices of breakfast items.
