Building Curious and Independent Learners

Our Prep Learning Community has continued to focus on building curious and independent learners. Students are well settled into daily routines and are immersed in deep and meaningful learning. The students have begun experimenting with a range of thinking routines. These routines encourage students to think critically and creatively and ensure all students are accountable for their own thinking and feel confident to share their ideas.

A key focus area this term has been centered around keeping our bodies healthy. Students have explored how our body works, by discovering interesting information about both our respiratory and skeletal system. Healthy eating habits have been explored through our weekly 'Discovery' sessions, which involves opportunities for structured play. This encourages students to be creative and become curious in their learning through 'play.' Imaginative play and arts and crafts stations are set up, and students are given the opportunity to choose what they would like to engage in. These stations are filled with resources and materials to promote healthy bodies; such as fruits and vegetables that can be crafted or purchased at the 'Wollert Worths' supermarket. Weekly 'Buddy' sessions with the Grade 5 and 6 students has also taken place to help promote healthy habits. The buddies have been teaching the Prep students active games to keep our bodies fit and healthy.

Our Preps have shown curiosity by partaking in weekly fitness sessions, where they have focused on becoming experts in an activity of their choice; including running, soccer, basketball and dance. Students have learnt a range of skills in their chosen activity and are working towards reflecting on their experience in the form of an oral recount.

In Reading, students have continued their Independent Reading Routine, where they are working towards developing the skills to become independent readers. We have read a range of big books and nursery rhymes where students have focused on reading for meaning, as well as analysing words and their sounds, particularly through rhyme. Multisensory Structured Language Approach (MSL) has continued to be a focus, where students have almost learnt all the letters and their sounds. The MSL approach uses using sight, hearing, movement, and touch, to give students more than one way to connect with what they are learning.

In Writing, students have been developing their ability to transfer their letter and sound knowledge on to paper. Students are encouraged to draw and write about experiences such as Discovery, building their vocabulary and language to include into their writing. Students have been experimenting with writing by using letter, words and pictures to convey meaning. Students have had a strong focus on correctly writing their name, using a capital letter at the beginning, followed by lower case letters.

Fluid math groups are in full swing in the Prep Learning Community, where learning is targeted, whilst remaining engaging and explicit. Students have shown to enjoy working alongside new children and engaging in different teaching and learning styles. Counting and place value concepts have continued to been explored during these sessions. Creating and continuing patterns and sorting and classifying objects into groups has also been a focus through hands on tasks.
