Artist-in-Residence

In Week 2, artist Joachim Froese joined us for our art lessons. All Visual and Media arts students experienced meeting and learning from Mr Froese and applying new ideas to their own work. Joachim shared with us his own work and the influences from art history that inform his work. A poignant moment was when he told us the story of his mother’s life through a series of multiple images of her bookshelf, including the books she read and objects that were precious to her. Joachim also led several workshops with students and teachers during classes and after school. By the end of his time with us we were proud of the developments made in our own work in the way we were able to improve photo compositions and use objects and settings to communicate meaning.

From Year 7 Visual Art students

This term in Art, I have enjoyed learning new ways to create beautiful and unique pieces of art. Some examples of this were when a guest photographer came in and taught us how to create photos with meaning, and showed us that anything can be turned into something with wonder and magnificence. During this workshop, we took photos of objects and toys. The photos I took on the day showed how there is always a journey to find a place where you belong, and you find that place eventually. In a different set of photos, I had taken a picture to show that, although an object seems out of place, it can also perfectly belong in the scene or place.

We had a guest come in and teach us how to compose a photo. He taught us this by showing us the proper use of camera angles and how to convey the meaning in a photo by the placement of objects in an environment. During this workshop I created many pictures with the use of objects and toys. I created meaning with one of my toys (Mario), by placing him on the whiteboard and drawing water beneath him with a marker to show that he is surfing. I was able to create an environment even without having all the right materials and tools. Overall, it was a great experience to be working with an artist.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION & COMPETITION – Nature Nurtures

This term the college community is invited to look around them and take note of ways that Nature Nurtures us.

Nature feeds us, sustains us, and lifts our spirits. It has been proven that spending time in nature creates positive mental health. Time spent in nature relieves stress, improves our cognitive function, and increases creativity and feelings of wellbeing. Cities built around green spaces have healthier populations, mentally and physically. Really, we are a part of nature, so it’s no wonder we feel better with our toes in the sand or on grass than we do in a concrete jungle.

So go into nature with your camera and take a great photo to express this theme. Entries close 17 June. All photos will be exhibited in Term 3, with awards for outstanding entries.
