Sheridan Gyles – PCYC Blue Star Award and Camp Participant

Sheridan Gyles – PCYC Blue Star Award and Camp Participant

Towards the end of last year Miss Paul introduced the Year 10 cohort to a camp run by PCYC known as Bluestar. I knew little of the camp and Wagga’s PCYC centre in general but was eager to go, little did I know it would be one of the most amazing experiences. The Bluestar Citizenship program is designed to bring the best out of people and give teens a new perspective on life. Teenagers from all walks of life across NSW flew to Narabeen, Sydney to participate in the four day camp.  Those who walked in shy walked out with their head held high. Goals were achieved and new skills were learnt by all including resilience, perseverance and acceptance. Throughout the camp both of the citizenship groups undertook a hike as part of our Duke of Edinburgh, and took place in a group canoe alongside the leadership group. These activities were two of many as well as games and competitive mini Olympics. The whole cohort of Bluestar participants were encouraging, pushing you to do your best and try new things. I can safely say that I made friends with a little over 60 people in under four days, with a small group who made sure there was never a dull moment, even in transit. The autumn Bluestar camp was by far the uncontested best part of my holiday, and I would never regret my decision to go. I encourage anyone willing to have a go, to sign up. Personally, I can’t wait for the next camp!

Kira Manning - Young Carers NSW Leadership Program Participant and Selected Ambassador

On the 18th of April I headed off to Sydney where I joined 13 other young carers, from all over NSW, aged between 16 and 21 for a leadership program. Young Carers are people under the age of 25 who care for a family member with a physical or intellectual disability, mental illness or who has a drug and alcohol addiction. We worked with the Young Carers Program from CarersNSW and an organisation called Mirri Mirri where we discussed the challenges of being a young carer. We then learnt to discover our strengths as young carers and how they helped us become great leaders, how to work effectively in teams, how to be interviewed so we can spread awareness of young carers effectively and we even got to visit Triple J and meet Tom Tilley, the host of ‘Hack on Triple J’.  I had an amazing time on this trip and made so many amazing new friends that I know I will be friends with for a while.

At the end of the trip, after a process of applications, interviews and speeches, my new friend Nick and I were named NSW Young Carers Ambassadors for 2016. I am very excited to see what this new role will bring and hopefully I will be able to meet and connect with more young carers in NSW! If you are a young carer or have any questions about young carers please feel free to talk to me!
