GRADE 1-2 UPDATE

Hello Grade 1 and 2 Community,

This week in Reading we read ‘Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley’ by Aaron Blabey. The students enjoyed identifying with the characters from the book, appreciating that our differences can be our strengths. When participating in their phonics groups, we have noticed many students building on their sounding out strategies to identify focus sounds, which has been great to see.

For Writing we read the Australian classic ‘Wombat Stew’ by Marcia Vaughan, with the text inspiring students to create their own revolting recipes. The students delighted in using descriptive language for horrid ingredients and enjoyed reciting their recipes to their peers.

The Math's focus this week has been on maps. Students have created their own maps of the classroom and used their map creations to navigate an area. It was great to see students apply math's concepts in useful ways. Additionally, we found the students particularly enjoyed this weeks game ‘Mastermind’, where students utilised problem solving strategies to identify a number.

Upcoming events/reminders:

  • We once again want to thank all our families for their support in ensuring reading is practised nightly.
  • Each day we have 2 fruit/vegetable breaks. Some students have been mentioning that they are hungry during this time but don’t have enough. It would be greatly appreciated if you could please pack a little extra.
  • Next Wednesday we have instructors from the AFL Auskick running a football clinic with the students. Please ensure that students have appropriate shoes for this activity.
  • From the 16th of May our 1/2 classes will be beginning out ‘Parent Reader’ program (9:15 am to 9:45 am). If you are interested in volunteering for this, please email your students teacher a suitable day and we will send out a schedule ASAP.

Have a lovely weekend,

Lauren & Demy
