National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

This week (and next week) we are celebrating NRW at Heidelberg Primary. On Tuesday we had a great performance by Nexus Arts (formerly PIE Productions) titled 'Majeda Beatty: Murri Island Girl'. The students really enjoyed the show and have followed up back in class creating books and writing about the experience.

Next Thursday 2nd June, is Heritage Day and students and staff can dress up to celebrate their heritage/ family background. Alternatively, students can bring in an artefact that represents their heritage. A gold coin donation will be collected by Junior School Council (JSC) and donated to a local indigenous organisation and Red Cross who are supporting families both here and overseas. The JSC have created some beautiful posters which you will see hanging around the school.

Parent Class Representatives

Just another reminder about an exciting opportunity to support our students and teachers. At Heidelberg Primary School we have a Parent Class Representatives system in place to support classroom (and specialist teachers) across the school in many ways. Thank you to those parents that have already spoken with their child’s teacher and offered to be the class representative.

What is the purpose of a Parent Class Representative?

Parent Class Representatives have a pivotal role in supporting the work of a class and teacher through:

  • the communication of specific information/reminders to parents – in the past this was largely done by email, though nowadays it is more likely through the year level Facebook groups or class Whatsapp group.
  • building a strong school community by engaging parents
  • building social networks within the school.

Note: This role can be shared between two people.

Please consider being involved and speak with your child's teacher in person, at the gate or via email.

Time commitment

Parent Reps do not have to (nor are they expected to) carry the entire load for their class. The Parent Rep role is to encourage all class parents to get involved when possible throughout the year.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Thao or myself for more information.
