Positive Climate for Learning

1-2 Learning Community

After an incredibly temperamental year, the 1-2s at ACS have continued to make our entire schooling community proud through their compassion and resilience. The staff in the 1-2 Learning Community cannot express the satisfaction of working with such an incredible cohort.

One of our main learning focuses in the 1-2 Learning Community has been ‘Using the correct punctuation in our writing’. We know that punctuation helps the readers of our writing to read with fluency and expression. The punctuation we have been learning about are:

  1. Capital letters - we use a capital letter at the start of a sentence or for a proper noun.
  2. Full stops - a full stop is end punctuation. Full stops always go at the end of a regular sentence.
  3. Question marks - a question mark is end punctuation. A question mark always goes at the end of a question.
  4. Exclamation marks - an exclamation mark is end punctuation. An exclamation mark always goes at the end of a really emotional statement.

Take a look at some of the work we’ve been doing to meet our writing goals.

Another main learning intention has been ‘Developing our understanding of place value’. Place value means that numbers have different values depending on where they are placed. We’ve been using concrete materials like popsicle sticks, Unifix, and even people to represent ones, tens and hundreds.

Have a look at how we used people to represent numbers. The people standing are tens and the people in balls are ones. Can you guess what numbers we’re representing?
