John Cain Library online resources and support  

 The Library team has developed a number of library resources to support students, families and staff while working and studying remotely. The school community can access these resources online through the John Cain Librarywebpage or myNorthcoteHigh using their Compass Id and password.    

   

The Student Research Skills page provides research help for all year levels. This  guide contains information and links to websites which will assist you to:  

  • Find information using databases and the web
  • Select and assess quality and reputable information
  • Acknowledge your sources to ensure you avoid plagiarism and follow copyright rules
  • Reference sources using APA or Harvard

  

We encourage you to explore the Database and Digital Resources on the library’s web page and utilize the various databases which include;  

  • ANZ Newsstream  - a full text online newspaper database
  • Wheelers eBooks and audiobooks – fiction
  • Clickview – video streaming platform for films and documentaries.

 

The Library page can also be accessed via the Compass star menu/Library sign in.   

  

If you have a problem accessing information or require assistance you can use the Ask a Librarian Email Service on the John Cain Library webpage.   

 

The Library team encourages students and staff to email questions to the email service.  Real time help is available during school term hours Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4pm. If your request is made when we are closed, we will respond on the next school day. The email address is library@nhs.vic.edu.au and please use your NHS email when using this service.   

 

Bookmark design challenge is back

 

Our popular design challenge is back for 2021. Combine your love of reading with your creative flair and design this year's official school bookmarks! Closing date is Friday 19 March.

 

Student Assistant Program  

All students are invited to participate in the Library Student Assistant Program.  

All year levels have the opportunity to train as a Library Student Assistants, gaining skills and valuable work experience including, using the library database for issuing, returning, renewing loans and placing reserves, on books and resources.  They also help with shelving books, covering books, creating displays, posting book reviews, recommending items for purchase and assisting with special events.  

 

Students work through a checklist of competencies and receive a competency certificate when all the tasks are achieved to the required standard. Student Assistants are asked to do a least one shift a week, shifts are for 15 minutes before school, during recess or lunch or after school. They always work in pairs gaining valuable work experience, making new friends and contributing to the school community. 

 

Students can sign up in the library for an introductory session at lunchtime on Tuesday 23 February in L4.  If you can’t make this session put your name down for the next one.  The Library has multiple introductory/orientation session across the year. 

 

Student Book Club 

The library has a thriving Student Book Club which is held every Wednesday lunchtime in L4. Come along if you enjoy all things books and literature. The club is student led and features discussion, group reads, competitions and occasional special events. New members are always welcome. Please bring your lunch.
