Music Matters

Welcome back to Performing Arts at SPX for 2021. Its great to see such healthy numbers across the board either beginning their Performing Arts journey or continuing. Certainly we will hit the ground running with our opening Mass and Academic Awards at Oxford Falls on 16 February. Our musicians will be involved in both ceremonies with the long awaited performances by our Senior Concert Band in front of a live audience. Unfortunately COVID protocols still remain and I await the day where we can have parents back on site for performances. Needless to say at this point we will continue to video as much of our students' performances as possible to keep them focused and present their work to you.

An exciting initiative by our own Ms Penny Lindley will see her and our students develop a film project based on climate change. This is an adjunct to our Drama Ensemble Program and will involve music and other areas of the creative arts at SPX. Further information can be found in the Drama Matters section of this Woodchatta.

Traditionally PAPA has held a welcome meeting at the start of the year. This year we will be conducting this meeting over Zoom on Tuesday 2 February. A link will be sent out later this week so you can join this meeting. At this meeting you can find out more about PAPA and what I envisage our performance program for 2021 will look like. See you then.

Due to COVID our singing activities have been severely curbed. This year I intend to rebuild our program in the following way. I am looking for 10 singers from Years 5 -12 to begin rehearsal on Wednesdays in the Sarto Centre form 7.30 am. We can successfully social distance in this space and it means we can start singing again. Please email Marylin McHugh, MMcHugh@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au  with your expressions of interest.

Our 2020 HSC Results were very pleasing in the Performing Arts. We were above the state average in both Music 1 and Drama, with Music 2 just under by a close margin. Well done to the students, teachers and families for their support of our students during a most unusual year. We look forward to the Class of 2021 and their continued dedication to their studies. We particularly note our Performing Arts Captain of 2020, Will Turner who is continuing to pursue his Performing Arts passion at Brent St this year having been accepted into the Music Theatre Diploma course for 2021. Well done Will.
