ACE

The Year 7 students are about to make their last visit to Courtenay Gardens Primary school (the last of three visits). Our students have been working with the Grade 4 students, developing their research skills on famous explorers.

The Lyndhurst students have certainly enjoyed their visits and working with the younger students. For some students, catching up and reconnecting with their old primary school teachers has been an added bonus.

The next community activity for the 7ACE class is a very exciting one. We have been very fortunate to be offered a partnership with the Cranbourne Botanical Garden’s and Melbourne Water to develop a frog pond at Lyndhurst. Over the remainder of the year and continuing into 2020, students will be involved in the initial research for the frog pond, including plant propagation, biological indicators, water testing and investigating the local and native flora and fauna of the area. The students will then take part in the building of the frog pond. A professional movie crew will be involved in taking footage of the student’s journey around building the frog pond and how to go about it. This footage will then be put onto the Melbourne Water web site, as a how to build a frog pond for the general public. This will be a very exciting opportunity for our students and we will keep you posted on its’ progress.

On the 13th August, the 8ACE and 9ACE classes attended Monash University on a discovery day arranged especially for the Lyndhurst students. The Year 8’s took part in a great RACE around the Monash Clayton Campus and ended up in the amazing sporting facilities.

The Year 9 students were involved with the Makerspace technology and had a tour of the huge campus. It was a great opportunity for the students to see and experience what University life looks like, as they begin to plan their future educational pathways.

The Year 9ACE class also visited Melbourne University on Monday 19th August, another opportunity to assist the Year 9 students to plan for their future.

VCAL in the Community

This term, Year 11 and 12 VCAL students have been involved in visiting and working in the Fareshare kitchen. Fareshare is the largest charity kitchen in Australia. They rescue food and cook it into free and nutritious meals for people in crisis. Our students were involved in cooking nearly 2,000 meals each visit, over the 3 visits made to Fareshare.

The Year 11 VCAL class have been learning about human hardships and homelessness. On the 2nd August, they visited the Salvation Army headquarters in Bourke Street. Did you know that on any given night across Australia, more than 105,000 people experience homelessness?  Homelessness does not discriminate and could happen to anyone. It was an amazing eye opener for the students and they all returned home appreciating what they have.

This Friday the Year 12 students will be visiting the Big Issue.
