INTERMEDIATE BOYS HOCKEY
The intermediate boys hockey team got off to a flying start in their round robin event, beating Merbein P to 10 College 3 goals to 0. The boys had a strong attack and kept the ball down their attacking end for most of the match. Their second match was much closer and a very even game against Irymple Secondary College. The final score was a 1 all draw.
The third match of the day was against Chaffey Secondary College and the boys went into it knowing they needed to win by seven goals to advance to the next level of competition ahead of Irymple Secondary College. Captain and top goal scorer, Liam Wood got to work and the score was 4-0 at half time. The goals continued at the beginning of the second half but Chaffey lifted and no further goals were scored after four minutes. Fortunately the final score was 7-0 with the team now advancing to the next round to be held in Bendigo. An excellent effort by the boys showing great teamwork, support and focus.
INTERMEDIATE GIRLS HOCKEY
A largely inexperienced but enthusiastic intermediate girls teams went up against an equally inexperienced Merbein in the first match of the day. The girls were not long getting off the bus and gearing up before they found themselves on the pitch at the Sunraysia Hockey Centre, learning all about hockey very quickly.
The match was an enjoyable game with the only goal being score by Merbein towards the end of the second half. Going into the second match, the girls were more prepared but also knew that every member of the Irymple team was an experienced hockey player. Isabella Piscioneri showed great leadership throughout the day, not only playing strongly across the field but also encouraging her team mates.
Irymple dominated the match with the score being 4-0 at half time. Whilst Irymple continued to dominate the match, goalie Jeni Treweek stopped countless attempts at goal and being strongly supported by defenders Amie Campbell and Kyra Duffy. An excellent effort from all the girls involved and although the score was 9-0, all players improved with each game played.
JUNIOR BOYS HOCKEY
The undermanned junior boys hockey team played four matches against Coomealla, Trinity, Merbein and Irymple secondary colleges. Our boys played well and the Merbein boys pitched in and played a couple of games with us to help bolster our numbers. Although nearly all of the boys had never played before they did show some strong team plays and mateship.
