Reading continues during Remote Learning

Despite the fact that we can’t have our regular 'Book Talks' or borrow library books during this period of Remote Learning, it’s great to see so many students are continuing to read regularly.

I created a Google spreadsheet for Year 7 students to record their reading and emailed it to them four weeks ago. It’s great to see that so far 153 books have been entered on this reading record. Likewise, the Year 8 students have been continuing with their reading challenge that commenced at the start of the year and there are many students who are continuing to record the books they are reading on their year level spreadsheet.

Although our students are reading so much at their laptops each day, I cannot stress enough the benefits of reading a printed book to take your mind to other places and develop empathy for the characters.

A favourite quote of mine is from George R.R. Martin (author of the Game of Thrones series):

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies….The man who never reads only lives one".

Happy reading everyone!

More Great News from The Library!

The Library has recommenced its subscription to “The Age" digital edition which we dropped at the end of 2014 due to it becoming sluggish – a problem they have fixed to our satisfaction now.

This database provides all students with access to EXACT replicas of the newspaper since 2006 up until the current day’s edition.  Students can see how issues break and how they are portrayed in the media, how long they last and what images go along with them.  Access is via a password protected image – all students should know the password by now! But if you have forgotten just send the library an email from and we can remind you…

You can access this from the home page of our Libguides here or simply Google “Kilbreda” and “Libguides”

Remote access to ATAR and NEAP exam and study guides for Year 11 and 12 students

Those of you with daughters in Years 11 and 12 may have heard that they now have access to the books, study guides and exam preparation guides for all subjects covered by the ATAR and NEAP companies. This is a great extension of our VCE collection and we hope it makes life a little easier for our Year 11 and 12 students.

For a refresher on how to use this service go to the  VCE Online Resources ATAR and NEAP guides and exam preparation Libguide here – or you can find it in the drop down menu under “Research Guides”.

eBook and eAudio book collection update

We have added a large number of the Children's Book Council of Australia’s books to our eBook and eAudio book collection.  You can see outlines to the stories in our “Readers Café: Read Online” Libguide here which will take you to see what you can borrow in these formats.  Again – downloading the app is very intuitive and this page has a link to take you to their site where you can do it.

There are still a LOT of books available for reading from this service.  Over April there were 94 loans with 23 reservations for ebooks – but only 39 active patrons – so there is certainly scope for more borrowing!  67.5% of loans were for eBooks while 32.5% were for eAudio books.  Give it a go!

Keep well and warm and keep exploring the world of books, databases, newspapers and learning.
