Student Representative Council

Student Voice Matters.

Tara Dennison & Paul Ting

School Captains

Another term, another great opportunity for the SRC!

Our restructure to a committee-focused operational model has been warmly welcomed by the team who expressed their thoughts in our end of term survey. The Committees have been forward thinking, setting in stone several ambitious long-term projects.

We are extremely proud with the bold, resilient, and flexible student body for their dedication, giving the SRC the best possible chance to be at the forefront of the Brunswick student experience. The committee leaders and their teams have kept the ball rolling over countless hurdles, meeting virtually and keeping in touch with each other between meetings.

Ultimately, it’s great to see the SRC help strengthen many cross-cohort relationships between students. We continue to aspire to empower as many younger students as possible to undertake greater responsibility through delegation and leadership appointments within committees. The guidance, support and mentoring that our seniors have provided will continue to be invaluable to achieving this.

In this report, we are excited to introduce you to our 6 committees and what they have in store this term.

HOUSE COMMITTEE

Alia Wong

House Captain

The House Committee has discussed and plan to soon introduce the new house points system. This system enables students to gain points through showing school values, participating in classroom competitions, and several House events. We hope to extend the house system within sport as well out into the broader student experience such as more House competitions that are to be run throughout the year.

A successful House event that has been run recently was the Bread Tag Collection Competition, a sustainability and recycling initiative organized by the food teachers. Points have been allocated to each house accordingly for their participation in this event. We are hoping to empower many more teachers to integrate Houses into their activities and events.

Additionally, the house committee formed a logo design committee which had met and shortlisted animals. These animals were voted upon by the wider school community. We are now in the process of turning the chosen animals into logos for each of the four houses and can't wait to share these with the wider school community.

EVENTS COMMITTEE

Ella Davis & Otis Tobin

Events Leaders

The Events Committee has gone through the first stage of the approval process and is now collating our plans for our second Leadership Camp. We're so excited to be able to host this meaningful event for the SRC cohort. It will likely occur on the 28th of August, and we will be presenting our final proposal soon! We hope to assist with more upcoming celebrations and events for SRC and the school community.

NEWSLETTER COMMITEE

Anushka Sharma

Year 9 Representative

The SRC Newsletters Committee is the newest addition to the SRC. Featuring hard working and determined students across all existing committees, we have created a fortnightly student led newsletter. In this newsletter, you can expect an overall summary of what we have been doing, what we have achieved, as well as messages from our other committees in the SRC.

We believe that it is important to inform and engage students in the projects their SRC is undertaking to make a difference for the school community. Our first edition focuses on introducing the committees of SRC. In future editions, we will have contributions from all SRC Committees including house point updates, sustainability tips, a student feedback form, and reminders of important dates/events. We look forward to engaging further with students and keeping everyone up to date with the SRC!

STEM x SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

Vy Vu & Xavier Cohen

Learning Leader | STEM Representative

The STEM and Sustainability Committee has created a plan for Science Week (August 16 to  August 20), with different lunchtime and Home Group activities to promote students' interest in all fields of science. These include a debate between students and teachers on Tuesday with the topic, "Is artificial intelligence a threat to humans?"; a robotics activity run by our Makerspace club on Wednesday; a Home Group Science Kahoot on Thursday; and various science experiments and demonstrations on Friday.

Another key project we have been working on is our Soft Plastics Recycling Program, which aims to help divert soft plastics from landfill. New labels will soon be placed on recycling bins to let students know which types of plastics can be recycled and where they should be put. Additionally, we have planned a soft plastics sorting system to be implemented if necessary, to prevent contaminated plastics from entering the recycling system.

During the past months, members of our committee have also been attending weekly Sustainability Club meetings to collaborate with them on various sustainability initiatives.

Finally, we collaborated with the Student Agency Committee to write a script for our sustainability video, which will teach students about our new three-bin system that includes soft plastics recycling. The video will also feature ways in which the school community can reduce energy use and landfill waste. We are in the process of filming this video.

STUDENT AGENCY COMMITTEE

Madeleine Horner & Lexie Sharples

Engagement Leader | Learning Leader

The Student Agency Committee is currently assisting the STEM x Sustainability Committee to create a video for the school community, providing some tips on how to decrease their environmental impact at school and home.

We have also been planning a student-led wellbeing support service, which is currently under discussion within the school's existing wellbeing team. The project has been hampered by the last few lockdowns, but we hope to develop it over this term.

Our most recent task has been planning a public SRC meeting set for the 19th of August. We are also considering reinstating suggestion boxes at various points around the school, for more constant student feedback.
