Year 7 & 8 Debating

The Year 7 and 8 debaters competed in the final round of the Junior Competition on Thursday the 22 October. Yet again students were a credit to the school demonstrating great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. It was a very successful program overall as it provided an opportunity for junior school students to participate in some training and to get some debating experience. Hopefully many of the participants will continue with debating next year.

The topic for the final debate was, ‘That we should significantly increase the price of petrol.’ All of our teams argued in the affirmative. Olivia Ton, Salma Jamal and Kathryn Chenh debated against Overnewton 4 and the girls won the debate by 2 points. Olivia Ton and Kathryn Chenh were named equal best speakers. Kya Williams, Emma Andrianopolous and Nhung Phan debated against Overnewton 3 and lost by a narrow margin. The girls did a great job given that Emma filled in with only an hour to prepare her speech. Finally, Zach Vitale, Isabel Fung and Kaitlyn Richards defeated Overnewton 5 by one point.

Thank you to all of the students that participated in the program and the parents that came along to support and encourage. Thank you to Ms Avril Good for coaching and supporting students.
