Kilvington to Welcome Japanese and Chinese Students

Kilvington will again host a group of Japanese students and teachers from Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior High School, Japan, for two weeks in Term 3, and host a group of Chinese students and teachers from West Yanan Middle School, Shanghai, for one week in Term 3.

The Japanese students are 13 to 14 years old and the Chinese students are 12 to 14 years old. They will come to School every day and spend time practising English, visiting the sights of Melbourne and mixing with Kilvington students. This will be a wonderful opportunity for families to host a student, learn about the Japanese and Shanghai culture and make a new friend.

This opportunity is open to all students from ELC to Year 12.

Some points worth noting:

  • The students do not have to have their own bedroom.
  • You do not have to cook Japanese or Chinese food or speak Japanese or Chinese.
  • The Group Coordinator provides families with cultural information and 24/7 support throughout the program.
  • A tax-free stipend of $420 for the fortnight (Japanese student) and $240 for the week (Chinese student) will be provided to host families.
  • A reciprocal trip to Shanghai is planned for Kilvington students in September 2017.
  • A reciprocal trip to Japan is planned for Kilvington students in April 2017 (tentative).

If you are able to offer accommodation for a Japanese student or teacher from Tuesday 26 July to Tuesday the 9 August, please express your interest by email or telephone to AIIU Group Coordinator, Joy Dickson, on 9576 7500 or at:

eliteshoptours@primus.com.au.

If you are able to offer accommodation for a Chinese student or teacher from Saturday 6 August to Saturday 13 August, please express your interest by email to International Student Coordinator, Mr Alan Clarke (clarkea@kilvington.vic.edu.au).

Ready, Steady, Learn! Attending and Engaging in School

Numerous studies have shown that mornings are a peak time for children’s learning. Children who arrive at school on time, calm and ready to learn are at an advantage before instruction even begins. But we also know that mornings can be hard, especially in the winter months. Frantic starts to the day can mean our children are spending that first part of the school day calming down rather than engaging with their learning.

Please join us for a session with Amanda Dudley, Psychologist, who will teach us how to create the calm and organised start to the day that best prepares children to learn.

Date: Thursday, 28 July 2016

Time: From 9.00am

Venue: MSC3-4 (opposite the Staff Lounge, near the Library)

Parent Education Program – Young People and Technology

The internet and mobile technology offers young people an enormous range of benefits that were not available to previous generations. They can get help with their homework. They can connect with people all around the world – particularly useful in small communities. They can anonymously access information from around the world on health and personal issues.

Mobile phones also give young people an extra layer of security if they’re out late. But of course, with all this access to new information and people comes new risks – whether it’s being exposed to inappropriate content, access to e-commerce (such as signing up for services or making purchases online), or the ability to have unsupervised conversation with strangers.

This information session will help parents understand how young people may be using technology, what some of the risks are and how you can help teach your kids to use technology safely at home. Book now.

Date: Wednesday, 3 August, 2016

Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm

Venue: Dalton Hall, Kilvington Grammar

Raising Resilient Teenagers: A Free Online Program for Parents

As children become teenagers, it can be hard for parents to know the best way to stay connected with their child. Partners in Parenting is a new online parenting program that has been shown to help improve parent-child communication and reduce family conflict.

Through interactive online activities, parents can develop skills in emotional intelligence, supporting their teenager through difficulties they face, and maintaining a close relationship with their teen. This program was developed by researchers at Monash University and the University of Melbourne, and is based on Parenting Guidelines that were published in partnership with beyondblue, and have been accessed and found helpful by thousands of parents worldwide.

Researchers are currently evaluating the longer-term benefits of the program by offering parents in Australia the opportunity to try it for free. If you are a parent or guardian of a child aged 12 to 15, you may be eligible to participate. Participation will take a few hours of yours and your child’s time over 12 months. Both you and your child will be reimbursed for your time.
