Altitude day - YLEAD Conference

Recently, the Year 9 leaders (Mitchell Cole, Toby Wrightson, Kate Glew, Jack Kirkham, Millie Hogg, Zoe Parsons, Johnny Barkoczy and Eliza Wallis) attended the YLead Conference held at South Wharf in the city. We all caught a train from Glen Huntly station and then a tram to South Wharf (with the help of a friendly metro officer).

The day began with a young representative from YLead talking about our goals, unlocking our potential as leaders and stepping out from our ‘comfort zones’ into our ‘growth zones’. We did this by introducing ourselves to a number of different people from other schools and talking to them about both our dreams and our goals.

We heard from several inspirational guest speakers throughout the day including Cam Greenwood, the creator of a surf company known as Monsta Surf, whose profit go towards providing food for third world countries and Daniel Flynn, the creator and owner of the ‘thankyou’ company that sells bottled water and other products to make the lives of those living in poverty better. Rowie McEvoy, a fitness and well-being coach, also gave us an inspirational talk about health and having a positive mindset. One of the significant messages from each speaker was that you should never give up and if you are passionate about something then don’t stop until you make your dreams a reality.

The day was extremely fun and we met many new people from other schools across Victoria. We left feeling inspired and ready to make a change in our own School community at Kilvington.

Year 7 Community Service

This term, Year 7 Religious Education students have undertaken a community service challenge. The variety of ways that students have chosen to serve their community has been outstanding. Students did gardening for elderly grandparents and neighbours, cooked and cared for people suffering with illnesses, babysat, raised money for charities, volunteered in our Early Learning Centre as well as local sporting groups. Students also gathered during lunchtime every week to knit scarves for local refugee people in the Bayside area. Here are some statements from students about their experience of this challenge:

‘By doing the work that I did at ‘Very Special Kids’, I have managed to put a smile on children’s faces by supporting them and their parents in the Treadmill Challenge. This is a money raising challenge to help make the hospice better for bereaved siblings’.

Ethan Dharmawardena, 7A

‘I baked brownies and cupcakes and sold them around the area to raise money for ‘Open Family Australia’ which supports homeless youth. In total I raised $72.’

Max Glazebrook, 7A

Several of our Year 7 students really went over and above for this task. One of those students was Caitlin Johnston from 7C who organised and ran a food stall as a fund raiser for Monash Children’s Hospital and successfully raised $320.00. Caitlin also volunteered at St Kilda Mum’s warehouse willingly bundling clothes for young children. On top of all of that, Caitlin also assisted the non profit organisation ‘Seven Women’. This organisation supports women in Nepal with literacy and leadership skills. I’d like to thank Caitlin and many other Year 7 students for their significant contribution within our School, local and wider community.

Science Careers Event

As part of Science Week, we are running a Science Careers Event. We are hoping to have representatives from as many careers in Science as possible to allow students to gain a greater understanding about possible future careers and the pathways to them.

Therefore, if you or someone you know has a scientific career that you think could be of interest, please let us know. All that would be required is your time, and for you to talk to small groups of students about your career and how you got into it.

Possible careers include (but not limited to!): Engineering, Medicine (doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists), Vets, Research Scientists, Psychologists, Health or Sports Science, Geology and any others.

Date: Thursday 18 August, 3.45 to 5.00pm in Dalton Hall.

Please email Alice James, Academic Dean of Science, if you think you might be able to help.
