AISAC Sport Exchange

From Wednesday 14 – Friday 16 September, 23 Kilvington students competed against 18 students from Global Jaya School from Jakarta, Indonesia, for the inaugural AISAC Shield (Asian and Pacific International Sporting Activities Conference). This involved the same students competing against Global Jaya students in the 5 sports of Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis and Ten Pin Bowling, with points being scored by the winning male and female team. Results for the competition were as follows:

 

Male Soccer: Kilvington won 3-0

 

Female Soccer: Kilvington won 6-0

 

Male Ten Pin Bowling: Kilvington won

126.1 – 94.3

Female Ten Pin Bowling: Kilvington won 106.4 – 81.4

 

Male Volleyball: Global Jaya won 3-2

 

Female Volleyball: Global Jaya won 3-0

 

Male Table Tennis: Kilvington won 8-1

 

Female Table Tennis: Kilvington won 7-2

 

Male Basketball: Kilvington won 67-30

 

Female Basketball: Kilvington won 85-16

 

Overall Shield Score: Kilvington 12 points - Global Jaya 4 points

 

During the Friday evening, an Awards ceremony occurred where the overall Shield was presented, along with various players being awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) medals and All Star team certificates. Congratulations to our MVP Medal winners:

  • Sara Ewenson and Lachie Pearce (Soccer)
  • James Teague and Hannah Bahn (Ten Pin Bowling)
  • James Teague and Cat Linehan (Table Tennis)
  • Olivia Kirkham and Callum Morgan (Basketball)

Students from both teams became friends, which was clear to see during the Awards evening on the Friday night and when the Indonesian students departed on the Sunday.

 

A huge thank you to Ben Bishop, Jason Moloney, Kerryn Warburton, Kylie Burns and Anna Kasapis for their expert coaching and dedication. Special thanks must also go to Marian LeBas and Nicole Pearce for their organisation of the Global Jaya students, especially with the homestays.

 

We now look forward to planning the return journey to Jakarta during September next year, where hopefully Kilvington can retain the shield!

RoboCup Championships

Congratulations to the Robotics Teams that competed in the Robocup National Championships in Sydney during the holidays.

 

The Secondary Dance / Theatre Team - Kilvington Sloppy Waffles - placed 2nd in their category nationally. Well done Jesse Thompson and Aden Kalleo.

 

For the first time, we placed in the Robotics Rescue competition. Kilvington Stormy 113 was placed 2nd overall nationally.

United Nations Diplomats

Congratulations to Charan Naidoo and Abbey McCorquodale, Y12, who reached the State Grand Final of the UN Youth Evatt Competition - a Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition for students in Years 9-12. More than 2,000 students compete in Evatt each year. It aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills. One of the resolutions debated by Charan and Abbey on the day was the 'Question of Genocide Recognition'.

WordMania Competition

Congratulations to the Y7AB Girls English class who entered the WordMania competition last term. They were National Finalists – ending up ranked 7th in Australia, and 2nd in Victoria!

 

As a result they won a set of literacy-based board games, and $150 of books from Australian Geographic, which they have donated to the Library for all students in the School to enjoy.

 

The competition featured over 260,000 students from 2,000 schools around Australia, who spent seven million minutes building more than 50 million words. Amazing!

Education Perfect Maths Championships

In the last week of July, students were invited to compete in the Education Perfect Maths Championships. For every question answered, students earned points and Kilvington received a number of credits, bronze and silver awards.

 

Congratulations to Rebecca Katz who achieved a Gold Award. She answered 3,694 questions and earned over 3,000 points, placing her in the top 2% of the 30,000 competitors from around the world.

 

Special mention goes to Karan Gonsalves who received an Elite Award. In just one week, he answered 12,818 questions and earned over 10,000 points, placing him in the top 0.2% of the 30,000 world competitors. This is an average of about 3 hours of maths questions every day for 7 days. Well done, Karan.

ICAS Mathematics Competition

On Tuesday 16 August, 97 students from Years 7-12 took part in the ICAS Mathematics Competition. It was a 1 hour competition, containing 35 multiple-choice questions and 5 free-response questions. Kilvington students performed very well, receiving 42 Credits, 18 Distinctions and 3 High Distinctions.

 

Special congratulations to the following students who received High Distinctions, placing them in the top 1% of their year level in Victoria: Blake Melbourne, Alastair Locke and Luke Lou.
