What is Fluency?

Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and automatically with accuracy, expression and attention to punctuation.

PACE:

The speed or rate at which you read.

The goal is to read at a ‘just right’ pace.

Not reading TOO fast or TOO slow.

When reading aloud, fluent readers sound natural, as if they’re speaking. Non-fluent readers read slowly and sound choppy.

PHRASING:

Reading smoothly by grouping words together into meaningful phrases.

EXPRESSION:

Reading like you talk (and not like a robot).

PUNCTUATION:

Reading with attention to punctuation means:

Stopping at full stops

Pausing at commas

Making your voice go up for question marks

Showing excitement for exclamation marks

Sounding like characters talking for question marks

Fluency is important because it builds a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. It allows students time to focus on what the text is saying. They are able to make connections between what they are reading and their own background knowledge. Therefore, they are able to concentrate on comprehension.
