ACC Cross Country Carnival 2023

On Thursday 1 June the Mazenod Cross Country team competed in the ACC Cross Country Carnival against over 80 ACC schools at Alderbury Reserve. With 300 runners in each race the 4km course around the parklands of Perry Lakes is one of the most challenging events on the school sports calendar, and is the biggest school sporting event in the state. The team were looking to build on last year’s 4th place in the Boys category and push for a win in the Overall Boys category. Mazenod finished the day outside the top 5 in the Boys aggregate, finishing 7th overall.

A big thanks to all the parents who came along to support the team, and to Mr Newman and Mr Mason for their assistance with coaching the team.

Mazenod 1st XVIII

Mazenod 1st XVIII - 3 .6 24 def by Darling Range 9.7 61

As the umpire said after the game, “The scores don’t reflect the efforts of your team”, and they were correct, as the team took it up to the undefeated ladder leaders who are a specialist football team. The boys admit their skills need more work and if our disposal was as good as DRSC, the outcome would have been a lot different. We're very proud of these boys and next week we're off to Secret Harbour to take on Comet Bay College.

Best: Xavier D, Michael D, Zaid B , Seth C and the rest of the team.

Goals: Tom M, Zak W, Josh M.

Senior Basketball

The Mazenod Senior Basketball team played All Saints College in the knockout stages of the Champion Schools Basketball 2023 All Schools Senior Boys Finals. The game was played at St Brigid's due to the Mazenod gym being already booked. Both teams were hit by injuries, and players being unavailable due to exams and Work Place Learning commitments.

All Saints established an early lead over Mazenod, with them up 13 at one stage. By half time Mazenod had reduced this to 6. We kept clawing away and reducing the lead, before finally taking a two point lead with only minutes to go.

Neither team could produce the decisive blow in the see-sawing encounter, which saw the scores tied at the final whistle. This saw us head into overtime one. At the end of this five minute overtime the scores were still tied!

Going into the second period of overtime Mazenod clearly had the fresher legs and managed to finally establish dominance and produced a 4 point lead, winning 72-68.

A huge thank you to the entire squad for their battling mentality, the players who stepped up to be part of the game day squad who didn’t get any court time and the other players who came to spectate.

Our next fixture will be on Tuesday 13 June against the winner of Clontarf and Shenton College.
