THE LOST JOURNAL OF THÉODORE LESCHENAULT, BOTANIST OF THE BAUDIN EXPEDITION with guest speaker Dr Paul Gibbard, Senior Lecturer in French Studies at UWA

The original manuscript journal of Théodore Leschenault’s voyage to Australia in 1800 to 1803 was long thought lost. But the journal resurfaced out of the blue in 2016 and was acquired by the French nation. This talk will explore what new information the journal contains and will discuss Leschenault’s encounters with Noongar people in south-west WA and his plant-collecting work at Albany, Geographe Bay and Shark Bay.

Paul Gibbard has now put together this intriguing journal as a book, titled “The French Collector: Journal and Letters of Théodore Leschenault, Botanist of the Baudin Expedition”.  The book will be available to purchase at his talk.
