Dear Families
Our Year 11 Pilgrims embark on their Pilgrimage to the Northern Territory on Sunday. Students have been working with Mrs Janeen Murphy, Deputy Principal Faith and Mission, over the past year in preparation for this life-changing experience. Inspired by our motto Seek Justice, the Pilgrimage experience requires students to work alongside people who are fighting for the injustices of our world, to experience a totally different way of living, discern transformative moments and engage in deep reflection. The timing of the Pilgrimage coincides with the Year 11 Id Quod Volo leadership program based on the model of servant leadership. Placing them out of their comfort zone, the Pilgrimage will provide students with the invaluable experience of learning from and giving service to others far removed from their lived experience.
As the final phase of their pre-Pilgrimage formation, staff and students were blessed at a moving Commissioning Mass on Wednesday. Our blessing and best wishes to all students and staff (Ms Catherine Roberts, Dr Ylenia Casadia and Mr Joe Shaw) for their incredible journey ahead. May they reflect the abundance of God in all their work and in all their encounters. May they be kept safe and well and may they know our love and support when they most need it.
Last weekend’s Music Camp was a huge success, thank you to all involved, particularly our wonderful parent volunteers and staff for their time and effort so that students could enjoy a weekend of performance and comradery with each other. Congratulations to students involved in the Years 7/8 Magis Personal Projects this week for their informative and well-presented displays. So too to Year 10 Drama students who performed this week at the Year 10 Drama Night, their confidence and creativity was impressive! Wishing all students performing tonight’s Year 9 Musical, The Lion King the very best as their hard work and rehearsals come to fruition.
Wellbeing Framework
Wellbeing at John XXIII College is based on the Ignatian virtue of Cura Personalis: the care of the whole person as a unique child of God. A strategic focus for the College this year is to develop a Framework that will deliver a contemporary wellbeing program for the community. Parents from Primary and Secondary are invited to attend a focus group on Monday 26 July, 6.30pm to 7.30pm to have input into the development of the Framework. Please complete the TryBooking link to register your attendance. Numbers will be limited to 75 participants.
Year 10 Course Counselling
This is an exciting time for Year 10 students as they consider their senior years and post-high school pathways. Students have been engaging in various pathways planning activities this term which will culminate in next week’s Pathways and Transition Day. To assist parents of Year 10 students through this process, the Year 10 Parent Course Selection Evening will be held on Tuesday 27 June beginning at 7pm in the GBLT. Various staff will speak about the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirements, the senior school Pathways on offer for Years 11 and 12, and the course selection process. On Wednesday 28 June, students will participate in the Pathways and Transition Day to learn more about the different courses and pathways offered in Year 11 as well as the course selection process. Students will be supported through the course selection process by staff course counsellors and will work with these counsellors on Wednesday 26 July.
Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews, Wednesday 19 July
Our next Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 19 July (8.30am to 6.00pm) as a valuable opportunity to discuss academic progress for students in Year 7 to Year 12. Secondary Teachers will be available for a combination of online and face-to-face interviews. Bookings via PTO will be available to parents from Friday 30 June until Sunday 9 July. More information regarding these interviews will be provided by Greg Moran, Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning.
Mobile Phone Expectations
The College recognises that the use of mobile technology is part of modern life and acknowledges parents may wish their child to carry a mobile device for personal safety reasons. The right, however, of a student to have access to a device at school, particularly a mobile phone, must be balanced with the responsibility to use it appropriately. We also believe in the importance of face-to-face communication which builds positive relationships and interactions between students and their friends while they are at school. Recently, there has been a rise in students having their phones on them in class and at break times. The result being that optimal engagement in learning is compromised by off task behaviour and, at times, inappropriate and disrespectful behaviour towards others whilst using their phones. Recess and lunch should be invaluable opportunities for students to connect face-to-face or participate in alternative activities such as sport. In support of student wellbeing, greater engagement in class and positive peer relationships, the College is refocusing its efforts that students do not engage with their mobile phones during the school day.
The current mobile phone expectations are that students keep their phones securely locked in their lockers for the duration of the school day (8.30am to 3.10pm). Students should not have their phone on them (with the exception that they have been given permission to use their phone for educational or medical purposes) during class time, recess or lunch. Students purchasing items from the Canteen can do so using cash, their Smartrider or a debit card. Consequences for inappropriate use of mobile phones include confiscation of the phone in the first instance, and further infringements for recurrent inappropriate use.
Expectations and consequences will be reiterated to students over the coming weeks and staff will be making a concerted effort to facilitate these expectations in the new term. Students requiring a new Smartrider to make Canteen purchases can order this for free of charge until the end of term at the Library. Further instructions regarding the use of the Smartrider for Canteen purchases can be found here.

Refugee Week
On Wednesday we had the Fare Go Food Truck visit the College and serve some cultural comfort food in celebration of Refugee Week.
Our Years 8/9 Rock Band provided music to add to the atmosphere in the pavilion.
Thank you to all staff, students and families who have donated generously to the CARAD appeal. The lack of access to government support and financial hardship have left people seeking asylum in our community extremely vulnerable. Our donations will be collected early next week and will make a difference.

St Louis House Day
The feast day of St Aloysius Gonzaga was celebrated on Wednesday 21 June. Part of the St Louis House celebrations involved a group of Year 10 and 11 students preparing 150 meals on Wednesday afternoon for Shopfront. The meals prepared will support people in our local community who are in need.
The celebration of St Louis House continued Thursday. During the House Assembly, we celebrated what it meant to be a member of our House, a spirited, caring, and generous group of people. An important part of our day was the pizza lunch. This moment provided us with an opportunity to come together and share food, laughter, stories, and moments of connection.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the St Louis House Staff, especially the unsung heroes, our St Louis Homeroom teachers. Thank you for the pivotal role you play in shaping the lives of our students.

ACC Boys Hockey
It was our senior boys hockey team's turn to take to the turn this week. This team and their coach, Mr Joshua Bowen, had the whole school wishing them well as they competed against the other Division 1 schools. The team played incredibly well all day to secure their place in the grand final against Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School. In thrilling fashion with a lead of 2 to 1, our team came home as the ACC Division 1 Hockey champions.
Mr Bowen has led this team for the past four years. With many of the team members being Year 12, this year was their last chance playing as a team, and this made this win even more special.
Congratulations to all players on a wonderful display of hockey throughout the day. Thank you again to Mr Joshua Bowen for all her time and effort coaching our team.
