What's Happening in our Classroom
The Year 1’s have had a great first week back at school and can’t wait for all of the exciting things we have coming up this term. In Week 3 we will be celebrating our 100 days of learning and visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo. Our students are also looking forward to participating in the upcoming School Production ‘Great Southern Land’, The Colour Fun Run and Book Week.
We would like to formally welcome Miss Tammie Hoang to the Year 1 Team. Miss H will be working in Room 5 with 1A each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Miss H is very excited to be in our team and can’t wait to get to know and work with all of the students.
Mathematics
During Term 2 in Mathematics, students used a range of concrete materials to help them learn all about addition and subtraction strategies. Our students will now begin to use their strong knowledge of number facts to explore multiplicative thinking.
We will also be starting a new unit of work on shapes, patterns and objects, as well as learning about mass later on in the term.
English
In English students have wrapped up their learning about Recounts where students explored writing about past events and experiences. This term students have just begun learning about Information Reports. When reading, students will be working on identifying the structure of an information report, nouns, pronouns and descriptive vocabulary.
We will be continuing to extend our students phonemic and phonological awareness skills this term. Last term, students continued to learn about long vowel sounds and different ways these sounds can be represented in written words. This term students will be learning about the following sounds (phonemes) /oi/, /oy/, /a_e/, /i_e/, /o_e/, /e_e/, /gn/, and /kn/.
Future Focused Learning
Last term the Year 1’s responded to the question: ‘How do we best share in the greatness of us, in our community?’. Throughout Term 2 students explored their own personal, family and community histories and participated in tasks which aimed to create harmony within our school. The Year 1’s were curious about how we could help our community, as well as wondering about caring for the environment. The idea of a Pay it Forward Toysale began as a dream and then became a reality and was shared with the entire school community. The students raised $500 for the Salvation Army and had the opportunity to present Captain Chad with the funds at a whole school assembly. The Year 1’s would like to sincerely thank everyone for their supporting their Future Focused Learning journey.
Our students are off to a great start and we can't wait to see how their learning will evolve over the term.
Warmest Regards,
The Year 1 Team
