NAIDOC Week

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, and is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

At our amazing school this week as well during next week, year levels have begun learning about the 2023 NAIDOC week. The theme of NAIDOC week this year is ‘FOR OUR ELDERS’

The artist who made this winning poster, Bobby Lockyer, wanted to showcase how important our Elders are in passing down traditions and culture to our children and future.

Year 3 students were encouraged to write a poem to remember our elders:

Year levels have also engaged in a range of different activities broadening their understanding as well as acknowledging and celebrating the cultures of the First nation peoples.

The Year 4s read about the history of NAIDOC during reading groups.

The Torres Strait Islander flag was created as a symbol of unity and identity for Torres Strait Islander peoples. The cultures and traditions of Torres Strait Islanders are strongly connected to the land, sea and sky — elements which are represented in the flag. The Year 1s learnt about the elements of the Torres Strait Islander flag. As an activity to help connect ‘FOR OUR ELDERS’ students in Year 1 created CSPS flags to show what their school means to them as a way for future generations to learn about.
