Curriculum Day - Professional Learning with Charles Lovitt

Today I share with you some insights into the Professional Learning that was undertaken on our recent Curriculum Day with Mathematics Education Consultant, Charles Lovitt.

Charles Lovitt is a well-known and highly regarded expert in Mathematics Education. He has co-directed several Australian National and State projects, and was director of Maths projects for the Australian Curriculum Corporation. He is now a consultant and a regular keynote and workshop presenter both in Australia and internationally. Recently Charles has worked with the participants of the DET funded PMSS (Primary Mathematics and Science Specialist) Program, in which our school is represented by myself and Mr David Mackay.

The major theme for our Curriculum Day was around quality Mathematics learning experiences. Many strategies are proven to bring about improvement in student learning, however, the provision of a well-designed task within a well-designed lesson is key.

During the day, our staff were involved in critically analysing several high-quality tasks and lessons. In doing this, we were able to establish a set of practical design features and qualities that can be used to analyse our current program and in the development of new content. Examples of considerations for a rich and balanced lesson include: Context and Relevance, Opportunity for ‘Active’ Learning, and Equity for all Learners.

I wish to thank our staff for their enthusiasm and commitment towards learning and driving positive change. As we move forward, I am confident that the learnings of the day will add great value to the program of Mathematics provided across our school.
