Old Collegians

Hi everyone,

Open Day is being held on Saturday 5th August, a little bit earlier this year. We will be exhibiting our memorabilia as well as collecting College raffle tickets at our table in the gymnasium. Be sure to come and say hello.

We are in the process of purchasing a memorabilia cabinet and hope to have it ready for Open Day. Many thanks to Rebecca Kirkwood and Alf Mungioli for their participation in this project.

Mike Martin and I attended the Harvey college open day in May. We were impressed with their overall agricultural activities. Beef cattle – mostly Angus – with calves at foot as well as bulls on display. The afternoon milking was on show with students participating in a large herringbone facility. Students shearing sheep in a modern shearing shed was another feature. The bus tours each had a student explaining details as we went.

All the workshops had modern equipment, one nostalgic feature for us was the woodwork section with students making tables etc. We met Amanda Gaunt on our travels and also Kelli Gillies who was visiting for the day. All-in-all, a very interesting event.

The ex-students association at Harvey has been renamed ‘Friend of Harvey Agricultural College’ and they had an impressive display of memorabilia celebrating 70 years of Harvey Ag. This got us thinking about the name of our association. It has been said that using the word ‘old’ in Denmark Agricultural College Old Collegians suggests all members are a bit long in the tooth. Whilst this is definitely not the case, it could be a good idea to consider a name change. Possibilities include Denmark Agricultural College Alumni or maybe follow Harvey’s lead and call it Friends of Denmark Agricultural College. We would appreciate your input so please let us know your thoughts.
