School Council

Dear Parents,

School council elections are now upon us and I would encourage any parent with a willingness and desire to contribute to making this wonderful learning environment even better for our students to consider running for a place on our council.

Many parents may wonder am I qualified to be a school councillor and what exactly does school council do?  Well in answer to the first question, all parents of students attending our school are eligible and qualified to be on council.  In fact the more diverse and rich the background of the council, the more representative it will be of our community.

In answer to the second question, below is a simplified breakdown of the functions of school council.

School councils:

  • Work to establish the broad direction and vision of the school within the school's community. Particularly important this year as our school will be reviewed and a new four year plan established.
  • They may raise funds for school related purposes and regulate the use of school facilities by outside providers.
  • They exercise a general oversight of the school buildings and grounds. You may have seen much of this work come to fruition this year.
  • Provide oversight of the spending of school money ensuring it is done for proper purposes relating to the school.
  • Ensure curriculum programs for the school are consistent with the intent of their respective policy.
  • Generally stimulate interest in the school within the wider community.

Importantly there are functions that school council do not play a part in and these include:

  • Councillors do not play a part in any complaint based process for the school.
  • Council does not employ teachers or support staff.
  • School council does not determine the curriculum, specialists or staffing provision or  involve themselves in the day to day management of the school.

All of these functions are the role of the principal and the senior leaders of the school.

School council meets eight times per year with a sub-committee meeting (of which all councillors are on at least one) in between each council meeting.

I would encourage all parents and caregivers to stay tuned to XUNO in the coming days when the first call for nominations is made and register your interest in being on council.  Of course if you have any questions you can always go to this link, or ask at the office for further information.

Gurpreet Thiara
