Year One

The Year Ones have had a wonderful start to 2022! We have settled into school routines and we are all enjoying our new classes. In Semester One, we have been practising our reading strategies and we have been learning about parts of a sentence. We know that a sentence has a Who and a What and that they all start with a capital letter and end in a full stop, question mark or an exclamation mark!

The Year One’s have also been learning about the environment and our 5 senses during Inquiry time. We recently went on a nature walk to collect different materials and we discovered new words to describe how nature looked, felt, smelt and what sounds we could hear. We found feathers that were soft and fluffy, bark that was rough and brittle and stones that were smooth and cold to touch.

After brainstorming all of our new words, we then drew pictures and created some beautiful artworks using our imaginations.

The Year One’s have loved exploring describing words and we have started using these new words in our writing! Our Writer’s Notebooks have started to fill up as we have been creating seeds and recording our ideas around them. If you receive any special mementos from outings such as brochures, pictures, or tickets, your child can bring them to school to use inside their Writer’s Notebook to inspire their writing.

Thank you for all your support so far this year. The Year One’s have sent diaries home and we have loved seeing so many children read each night using their take-home readers. We have also loved seeing so many students practising their Magic Words using their Magic Word book. Remember, your child needs to bring their reader, book bag and diary every day so they can change their reader and so their teacher can check how many nights of reading have been completed 😊

Thank you,

The Year One Team.

Foundation

What a busy start to the year we have had in Foundation! We have welcomed our students to their first year of schooling and supported them in settling into school routines. We have been learning positive behaviour choices and earning tokens through our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program. The students have enjoyed playing outside on our adventure playground and making new friends.

We have started learning letter names and sounds, beginning with ‘m’ and ‘a’. We will be learning two new letter sounds each week and encourage our Foundation families to review letter names and sounds at home. In Writing, we have been working hard to practise writing our names, using uppercase and lowercase letters. The students have been learning the difference between letters, words and sentences and beginning to co-construct sentences with their teacher and peers. This week the students began recount writing by constructing a sentence about something they did on the weekend.

In Mathematics, we have been practising our number formation and counting with one-to-one correspondence. We love listening to songs to help us with our number formation and counting all the way to 100! It has been wonderful to see our students’ enthusiasm and engagement with mathematics, especially when using hands on materials such as play dough and linking cubes.

We would like to thank all of our Foundation families for their support in settling the students into school this term. It has been wonderful to see the students reading every day with their family and completing home learning tasks. Please do not hesitate to get into contact with your child’s teacher either in person or via Compass if you have any queries or questions.
