A Strong Finish
As the year draws to a close, there is no winding-down phase at Saints. Teachers are aware that we teach and assess through to the final bell on Friday 25 November. The boys also know that the College’s expectations regarding application, behaviour, uniforms and grooming and assessment never waiver. Part of building resilience is to see things through to the finish, and this applies to our students’ academic year. I ask that all parents reinforce this message.
Aerosol Deodorant Procedure
As we finish the year and endure the tropical heat and humidity, it is timely to revisit our aerosol deodorant procedure.
Rationale: Many students and staff at St Augustine’s suffer from asthma, and some suffer from severe allergies and anaphylaxis. Aerosols can act as triggers for these people, resulting in symptoms such as asthma attacks, headaches, including migraines, and in extreme cases, anaphylactic shock. In addition, aerosols can be dangerous as they contain flammable liquids and can be harmful if inhaled. For these reasons, aerosols are banned from school premises, on excursions, after-school activities and sporting events in the day school and in boarding.
Student and Staff Responsibilities
Students are encouraged to observe good hygiene practices including showering regularly, wearing a clean uniform and applying deodorant before attending school. Roll-on and stick deodorants are allowed to be used at school.
For safety reasons, if a teacher or boarding supervisor becomes aware that a student has an aerosol deodorant, they will ask the boy to hand it to them; they will inform the relevant head of year and, if applicable, relevant head of residence.
Using aerosol deodorant at the College or during college-related events, depending on circumstances, may lead to disciplinary action.
