The Good Samaritan
The weekend's Gospel journeyed through the parable of the Good Samaritan. It is a Scriptural narrative that we often share and teach about with our students. As the quote from Luke above suggests, '...we should love our neighbour as we love ourselves'. This is emulated by the Samaritan who assisted the injured Jew on his way to Jericho.
The Samaritan saw the injured Jewish man lying on the road. Unlike the priest and unlike the Levite, he stopped and took pity on the man. He bent down and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He helped the man climb up onto the back of his own donkey and then took him to an inn, walking alongside.
It is no surprise that the priest and Levite provide no assistance to the Jew as this would render them ritually impure and unable to fulfill their responsibilities. Nevertheless, Jesus surprises His audience by including the assistance of a Samaritan toward a Jewish man, as they are historically, renowned enemies. He challenges the audience of the time as well as the present community about the ingrained hostility towards Samaritans and how this can be overcome.
The parable can be recontextualised in contemporary times to the happenings around the world, in our own country and our own Cranbourne Community and even the playground. We all have the ability to be Good Samaritans.
Sacrament of First Eucharist
This term, students will be preparing for the Sacrament of First Eucharist.
