Communicating our faith

‘They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.’ Acts 2:1-11.

Last weekend we celebrated Pentecost Sunday; when the disciples were empowered to preach the message of Jesus in languages that could be understood by all. To this day Pentecost remains a model for the continuing life of the Church as we attempt to speak meaningfully for the people of our own time.

This week our College Council and our College Leadership Team met to discuss ‘big picture’ strategic directions for the next five years. The message of Pentecost is particularly pertinent as we refine our own relationship as a Catholic school in the Ignatian tradition. Two of the important directions for our consideration include:

  1. What does it mean to be a Catholic school in the 2020s?
  2. How do we refine and enhance the relationship between the College, Jesuit Education Australia, Loreto Ministries Ltd and Catholic Education Western Australia?

All Catholic schools are inspired by the Gospels of Jesus. Our Loreto and Jesuit charisms and the example of Pope John XXIII provide further insights. Some of our challenges can be articulated in the four-fold mission of Jesuit education today:

  1. Educating for faith in an increasingly secular world.
  2. Education for depth in our global society.
  3. Educating for reconciliation as we connect with issues of marginalisation and human rights.
  4. Educating for global citizenship and a commitment to care for creation.

Many of these issues parallel the concerns of modern society for a more just and equitable world. We look forward to keeping our community informed of our plans.
