Year 5 French bakery incursion

Madame Mullins, Junior French teacher

The Year 5 students recently enjoyed a ‘boulangerie’ incursion where they sampled authentic French bakery items such as croissants, pains au chocolat, brioches and beignets.  In order to receive their pâtisserie treats, the students conducted a shop dialogue and requested their items in French.  Bon appétit!

Year 6 Winners of the AFTV Francophonie Competition

Lucie Dickens, Academic Dean of Languages

Congratulations to Year 6 students Grace Anastasiadis and Emily Morris who came in 2nd place in the Years 5 to 6 Category in the Francophonie competition organised by the Association of French Teachers in Victoria and the Melbourne Forum de la Francophonie.

As part of the French Key Assessment Topic in Term 1, Year 6 students were asked to research a French-speaking country in small groups. Grace and Emily produced a video to present and describe New Caledonia and the activities offered there when visiting.

Using only French, and the structures we had learnt in class throughout Term 1, students were able to demonstrate proficient language acquisition for Year 6 standard. Emily and Grace used a green screen and provided their transcript as subtitles, demonstrating sound ICT skills.

Other students produced videos about Switzerland, Guyane, Martinique, Quebec, Senegal, Reunion Island, Luxembourg, Guadeloupe, Madagascar and Comores Islands.

On Saturday 16 July, Grace and Emily will receive a prize at the award ceremony held at Federation Square as part of the Bastille Day celebrations.

We are very proud of them. This is the second year that Kilvington students have won 2nd place in this competition.

Years 10 to 12 French film excursion

Charlotte Westaway, Year 11, Languages Co-Leader

Oui, Chef! Recently, Senior School French students were fortunate enough to escape Melbourne’s dreary weather for an end-of-term cultural experience.

Featured at the 2022 Alliance Française French Film Festival, Louis-Jean Petit’s new comedy film La Brigade (The Kitchen Brigade) explored the uniting power of cuisine and highlighted some of the adversities faced by migrants today. Amid light-hearted banter and moments of dismay, emerged the tale of struggling sous-chef Cathy Marie, who reluctantly fills a position at a youth hostel cafeteria.

Under Chef Cathy’s guidance, young migrants struggling to obtain citizenship rights immerse themselves in French culinary arts, enthralled by the intricacies of gourmet cooking. Over the course of the film, the protagonists gradually band together as a 'brigade' of fellow commis, developing along the way a profound love for French gastronomy and Cathy Marie’s teachings.

La Brigade captured our attention with its insightful messages, heart-warming plot and endearing characters. Most importantly, the filmallowedus to enrich our knowledge of French cuisine, language, and social issues – all from the comfort of a movie theatre.

A massive thank you to Madame Dickens and the rest of the French staff for organising this excursion. C’était super!
