The Year 9 Music class recently went entre to see Baker Boy perform in the MEGAMIX Social - a free concert staged at Hamer Hall and open to all students who attend a government or low-fee non-government school.
It is exciting to see live music events happening again and the energy in Hamer Hall was electric. The event showcased a variety of artists performing contemporary Australian music. To warm up the audience of secondary school students from across Victoria, there was a live DJ with dancers. The Halo Vocal Ensemble then sang some beautiful contemporary choral pieces that featured Thando Sikwila from The Voice.
Before long it was time for the 2019 Young Australian of the Year, Baker Boy, to hit the stage. He had the whole crowd up and dancing in the aisles! Performing a number of his original hip-hop songs that incorporate both English and Yolnu Matha Indigenous language, the crowd was mesmerised.
"I'm a proud black Yolngu boy with the killer flow
Listen to the yidaki, listen to it blow"
Following the performance students explored the Australian Music Vault within The Arts Centre. This exhibit features clothing, instruments, original song-writing documents as well as performance items from some of Australian’s biggest music artists.

The Baker Boy concert was surely a blast. My favourite thing was when the dancers came out and started to breakdance. It was very impressive! The other thing I liked was when we went to the Australian Music Vault to look at different artists belongings. It was a fun day, I’m thankful to have come.

I enjoyed going to the Australian Music Vault art gallery within the Arts Centre. It was awesome seeing Bon Scott’s jacket and Angus Young’s outfit from AC/DC. It was pretty cool seeing a concert too!

“I like the Baker Boy concert as it was the first concert I have been to. Also the Australian Music Vault was fantastic. All of the memorabilia was super cool especially Bon Scott’s jacket and reading the history of it. It was good and I enjoyed the whole day.
