Olivia Cruse
MasterChef Coordinator
On Monday 6th June we held the 2022 BSC Junior MasterChef Challenge.
Twenty-two aspiring cooks took part - all producing delicious and inspiring dishes in just 60 minutes. Teams were charged to cook a dish that included a minimum of two of the mystery box ingredients and pantry staples provided. This challenge required creativity and teamwork, and I am pleased to say that the challenge of producing a dish under the combined constraints of time and resources really brought out the best in our budding chefs.
Ms Harris (Principal), Mr Roach (Year 8 Coordinator) and Ryan Wu (School Captain) had the unenviable task of judging the contest. Criteria included taste, appearance, and demonstrated skill - and it was no easy job to choose between the entries: perhaps they were all winners!
It is clear that the students have an enthusiasm for cooking, and to see them demonstrate this is exciting. Watching them challenge themselves to use different and unfamiliar techniques and ingredients, it was obvious that a project such as the Junior MasterChef Challenge supports and promotes learning strategies across all Learning Areas. Using innovation and creativity to solve problems, sharing their goals, developing confidence in their ability to persevere and to strive for excellence - these experiences can be applied to all of their individual endeavours.
Most importantly, we saw all the teams celebrating each other's efforts in the spirit of friendly competition. Our Junior MasterChefs not only backed themselves, they backed each other!
Congratulations to the following stand-out entries:

Together with the food teachers, the SRC Student Agency and House Committees had the pleasure of organising the Junior MasterChef competition. Following the success of this event in previous years we were very excited to see it happen again, allowing a whole new group of students to showcase their skills in the BSC Food Studies Hub.
We extend a huge thank you to Ms Cruse for organising this event as well as Ms Harris (Principal), Mr Roach (Year 8 Coordinator), and Ryan Wu (School Captain) for judging on the day. Finally thank you to all of the students who participated! We hope you all had a wonderful time.
Whilst the MasterChef competition was an exciting way for students to have fun and do some cooking, and they also racked up some House points in the process!
