Maths

This week we have been working once again on fractions. We have focused on visualising, representing, comparing and placing fractions on a number line. The students have enjoyed playing games and working in small groups.

Writing

We have been working on including dialogue in our writing that has a purpose.

Students have been practicing cutting out the boring small talk and writing lines that:

  • moves the plot forward
  • reveals something about a character
  • makes the scene more dynamic

They especially liked the 'what do you meme' activity where they had to caption the memes and write what the characters could have been saying.

Reading

We have now begun indpendent roles in our Literature Circles, where students view texts from different perspectives and then come to gether as a group to share what they have recognised. The roles include Illustrator (where students draw what they 'see' from the descriptions in the text), Passage Picker (where students focus on particular passages that stand out from the text, that may be interesting, revealing, challenging), Word Wizard (where students attend to words that they find challenging or unfamiliar, powerful, interesting), Summariser, Connector (where students find text to text, text to self or text to world connections).  Ask your child what text they are reading, and how the role while they read influences how they feel about the book.

Lightning Premiership

Friday, Week 6 saw all of our Year 5 and 6 students attended at Ballam Park and Jubilee Park for a day of Soccer and Netball for the District Lightning Premiership. Students played 9 games in quick succession to recognise a District Premier. The students put in their best efforts with some outstanding performances. Although neither of our teams won their respective Division, each team managed wins along the way. The mixed Netball team finished in second place!

Courage to Care Incursion

Last week we had a company come out to talk to the students about how harmful stereotypes, racism and discrimination is.

The children engaged in some activities and listed to a holocaust survivor share his story about how courageous people saved his life in the 1940's.
