Week 8 Term 2
Over the next fortnight we will be integrating our Literacy and Inquiry topic to write an informative piece on an endangered animal. Last week in Inquiry we chose our focus animal and looked into it's current endangered status. In reading, we will use our time to read about our endangered animals and use this information to plan for and write our informative pieces. We will use information from specially selected websites, online reading from Epic and our school's library books to help us along the way. Below, the students are sharing facts and information about their endangered animals with a friend during Read to Someone in the reading hour.
To finish the term we will continue our work on time. We have been using a variety of activities to engage and immerse the students in different aspects of time. We began by making our own analogue clocks. We have also used different hands on and online resources to practise telling the time. A number of these online activities can be found in the student's Google Classroom feed and on Matific. Details on how to access Matific can be found on the home learning grid.
To begin term 3 we will focus on multiplication and division. We have been implementing some ongoing assessments to check the student's understanding of multiplicative thinking in readiness for the unit.
As mentioned above we have been researching about different endangered animals. The children used information from the WWF to learn more about their endangered animal. They were required to learn about their animal's current conservation status, region / country living in, their specific habitat in which they live, what threats they are currently facing, and what the WWF is doing to help protect the animal. From there, we are creating posters to educate others about the threat to our chosen animal.
In our help seeking unit this term our goals were:
• Identify communication skills that enhance peer support and help-seeking
• Identify a range of conflict resolution and help-seeking strategies to negotiate positive outcomes to problems
• Describe and apply strategies that can be used in situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
During the past week we have been learning about how to acknowledge when we require support to handle difficult situations. Using small group activities and whole class discussions we've spoken about situations that require the support of others i.e friends and adults, and those situations that we can handle ourselves. In identifying situations that required help or support we should think about the situation and ask...
• Does it hurt or upset anyone?
• Does it break the rules?
• Does it make the school an unfriendly place?
• Does it stop people learning?
• Could it get worse if you did nothing?
• Could it get worse if other people did not help?
Don't forget next week we will be finishing at 1:00pm on Tuesday 21st June because of the Parent / Teacher interviews. Look forward to seeing you then!
Brendan.
